Could someone break down the different models for me?

I'm thinking about buying one? If I can sell my current ride. I'll probably try and buy a 2013ish model.

    Tacoma TRD Sport
    Tacoma TRD 4x4
    Any any others?

This plus I believe the Off-road package comes with the BFG AT tires (16" rim) and the Sport has street tires on a 17" rim.

All sounds right above. If buying new, make sure the dealer doesn't bling it out with overpriced oem accessories eg: $500 chrome tube steps, $150 floor mats, stainless exhaust tip,etc... A good dealer will remove these items and deduct it from the price. I knocked off $750 dollars and got the tubes for free! I got the DCSB trd sport, but I don't really off road it. As the almighty OZ says I do some hardcore mall crawling, and I am the coolest dad at ballet class. I also don't like the bling of the chrome.

Correct me if I am wrong, I think you can get a TRD Sport and a TRD Off Road in 2WD as well. Not always 4X4. I recently upgraded from a Prerunner SR5 DCLB, to a TRD OR AC 4x4, and really like the better seats in the TRD, DC Long bed only available in TRD Sport, and SR5 trims, no DCLB (6') in TRD OR. All Access cabs (AC) are the 6' bed. Good luck in your hunt !

They cost less... and that works out for a lot of people really well until they're sitting in a lifted truck, getting tugged out of a hole by a frickin' Subaru.

As far as cost savings go the difference between the TRD packages and the SR5 package is not that large (around $1500), while the difference between TRD and base/convenience packages is quite a bit larger. So if you want the SR5 features and will ever go off road I'd say go for a TRD package. If you want to replace nearly everything on the truck anyway then there is some reason to consider a base/convenience package using the savings to upgrade. Remember, you can't finance your upgrades but you can finance the TRD option package.

As others said, the TRD Sport doesn't really add anything for off-road. The hood scoop is of course useless and 16" rims on the TRD Off Road are preferred to 17" rims on the TRD Sport for off road. Of course the TRD Off Road also comes with a rear locker, ATRAC and on automatics DAC as well. That also means a better integrated brake booster and ABS system on the TRD Off Road.

To me if you want off road performance your best options are:

    TRD Off Road
Base/Convenience with a lot of your own stuff added
