I'll start by apologizing if this should be posted to one of the other forum folders such as technical. I searched a little for noises in 2015 models and found a post about the smog pump whirl down noise heard while shutting her down (I have that but not what I'm looking for). I have a different noise that I can't quite make out yet. I hear a faint noise when I first go to pull off. No noise when I first shift into drive and let off the brake, but after just a little bit of a roll forward, I hear a faint noise. Sounds like something shifting slightly like something may be disengaging. Or possibly a solenoid shift? Thought it might also be the doors auto locking. Our former 2004 4Runner would lock the doors after shifting into drive and pulling off. However it was very distinct and loud. No guessing about what it was. My hearing is not great (ears ring most of the time). I'll check for loose stored items behind my rear seat. I'll also check my rear brakes this weekend while rotating the tires (only at 5k now).

Just wandering if someone else may have heard a similar noise. I can't swear it does it every time. Radio may be up in some instances or I may not be paying attention each time.

    Thanks

Sounds like brakes breaking free when you first roll

I hear the exact same thing every time I pull forward after starting the vehicle and releasing the parking brake. It's been driving me nuts, because I have no idea what it is and if it's a problem. My only guess has been the brakes releasing but what do I know.

Heard the same thing today and hadn't noticed it before.

I assumed it was the doors auto locking as well, and that's what I'm inclined to believe it is for now.

To add to the "list of annoyances observed by first time Tacoma owners", the brake pedal will occasionally make a "twitch" type of sensation when depressed. I think it has to do with some type of mechanical adjuster in it that probably is adjusting the travel on the fly. In my old Ford, I could sit in the truck when it wasn't on and pump the brake pedal until it couldn't be pressed any more. This was suggested as a routine thing to do to keep them adjusted. In the Taco, you can sit there and press the brake pedal all day long and it won't do the same thing.

Let me clarify by saying that I do not use my parking brake as a norm. I push the brake in, shift to drive and release to pull off, then I hear the noise shortly after rolling.

Today I listened much closer while driving to and from work. After work my wife was in the truck as well. She has better hearing for sure. From what I can tell, the noise I hear is coming from the same area as the smog module "whirl" we hear when turning off the truck. The noise sounds a lot like something energizing..but faint. So it could be related to the same smog module "turning on"?

I have not noticed much in the way of a noise from the brake yet.

that noise you hear is probably the abs pump...
when i go to turn the truck on in the morning and leave, about 10-20 ft of driving forward (long driveway) no matter the speed, i hear the abs pump

    happens to all the tacomas

Thanks..good to know. Never heard anything like in in our 2011 4Runner or the old 2004 4Runner so I was curious. I've driven a 98 Tacoma so long I was use to all the squeaks and rattles. Old technology so nothing turning on and off like this one. Have a great weekend.

Check your front brakes for shifting. At 44K I could actually grab my front brakes and I can slightly shift them forwards and backwards and I hear the click as I do it. Its a common thing on these Tacoma's its just an imperfection in tolerances. If its not that, check your transfer case/ transmission output shaft pinion shield. I have noticed some of them seem to come into contact with the driveshaft.

I just continued to read past the first few posts. If you hear a whirl, its the ABS modulator pump. Sometimes they make noise. Nothing to worry about.
