I'm confused (among other things)

I recently ordered, received, and installed an o2 sensor from RockAuto, part number DEN

$52 234-4162 Oxygen Sensor with 4-Wire 10.5” Harness for Non-California, Non-4WD Lexus/Toyota

234-4162, what I understand as the downstream sensor. I need to replace the upstream sensor (the longer one) as well but can't understand how to order it when both upstream and downstream sensors are listed together on the website.

Have you tried going to Denso website and cross referencing the part numbers?

The following are the replies I got back from RockAuto. I thought the upstream sensor was longer but I may be mistaken. Anyone have a '98 Taco that has done this?

Thank you for the follow up. The part would be a universal part which will work in either the upstream or downstream position, usually you have to splice out the plug. If you want a direct fit you will need to order a part that is listed as upstream only.

I ordered OEM parts from Toyota. I didn't want to mess with aftermarket 'surprises' - and now I know exactly why. Toyota says one thing and Denso says another.....

According to this Toyota site (OEM parts) - a 3.4L Auto trans 4WD Front & Rears have different part numbers.

Are you 4x4?

Here's the upstream O2 sensor I ordered from Rock Auto for my 98 V6 4x4 5-speed manual (can't remember if the auto or manual makes a difference)

Sounds like the difference is the wire connector. Upstream and downstream (and possibly manual versus manual trans, and 4WD/RWD) have different connectors, but the sensors themselves are the same. If you get a universal sensor that you have to splice in yourself, then the connector doesn't matter, so the part number will be the same.

 

The difference between the two part #'s is only the wire length. I switched the two during troubleshooting my FTC years ago and never switched them back.

 

So do you know how I would go about ordering the sensor with the longer wire? There is no differentiation on the RockAuto website. Did you order a Denso from them as well?
