My 2014 TRD Off Road Tacoma won't come out of 4 LO. Our temp is in single digits and last night I had to drive home in a fairly hefty snow storm through deep snow in excess of 12". Truck drove fine earlier today and I was heading out to run an errand about 1 hr ago stopped shifted to 4 LO to get through a snowy area and when I stopped on other side to shift out it wouldn't come out.

In trying to figure out if this was an electrical problem I've shut the truck off and restarted. No luck. I've cycled 4x4 selector switch it still wouldn't switch out of LO. I've stopped put tranny in reverse and tried to switch out no luck!

Wondering if some snow has packed into undercarriage where it's creating a problem with electrical or mechanical? Too cold out to crawl under tonight. Truck is usually parked outside but I'll swap out and put the Tacoma in my garage tonight to see if that will help? Would it be worth a try to disconnect positive side of battery to see if that would "reset" something?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,
    Skip

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    Is it 4LO or 4H ?
If it is 4LO you need to be stopped and in neutral to shift in and out.

If you don't use it much it gets hung up. The owners manual says to exercise it once a month. That said, the actuators have been a problem with these trucks. There are two of them, one on the front axle and one on the transfer case. They are both electrically operated. Read the card on your visor carefully and make sure you are shifting it right, and if it still won't shift take it to the dealer. If you can't take it to a dealer it is possible to repair yourself (if broken, I doubt it as it's such a new truck). Search for actuator repair and you'll find lots of threads about it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! My error, I was trying to shift it out of 4LO with the tranny in park and not in neutral.

Never drive around with a tranny. People will get the wrong idea.
