    Everybody,
Saw this post a while back and decided to try it out.
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/6610-not-your-typical-homelink-install.html

It was pretty simple and a good solution for us with Tacos with the 2" thick visors that you can't get a opener to clip onto.

First thing you need to do is find a Homelink Module from a donor vehicle. These are usually installed in visors. I purchased mine on Ebay for about $25 shipped. I do have rolling code openers so I had to purchase the compatible ones with the little house logo on the bezel. Mine was from an 03 Town Car. The grey is slightly ligher than our interior color, but looks fine on the headliner.

Here are some pics of the unit and the unit with the bezel attached:

Next remove your overhead console. There is one screw in the glasses compartment and two metal clips on the front side. Undo the screw and pull down on the forward part of the console and it will pop loose. Be mindful of the two metal clip retainers as these will need to be re-used.

Next you need to move the wiring loom in the headliner. It routes where I installed mine. There is some tape holding the wiring down. And this clip pictured here, scoot the wiring over so you don't cut the loom when you cut the hole:

Next I used a piece of green tape to lay down a guide line to make the primary cut on. I measured from this to ensure alignment from the dimple for the visor.

To gauge the size of the hole required I made a little template. The overall dimensions are 2" x .75". I made from an old cereal box. I used it to mark the headliner with a pencil.

Here is the hole cut, I used a brand new boxcutter blade. Nothing like cutting a 2 week old truck.

Here is a testfit with the unit in the headliner:

Here it is with the bezel test fitted:

It was a pretty snug fit, what I did to help was take my boxcutter and thin out the foam backing on the headliner. This allowed a better fit. Since these are usually installed thru a visor and much thinner material. The buttons work fine and it is secure. Other threads put in some foam to back up the module. There is a metal brace running behind mine and the roof doesn't move when the buttons are used. But if its open above your location use a foam block to back it up. I just taped mine to the back of the headliner with duct tape.

Wiring is a piece of cake. There is a black wire (ground) and a white wire (12v+). What I did was wire these into the circuit for the map lights. After I wired them I went to homelink.com and pulled the directions for an 03 Town Car. Programmed my doors and it was a piece of cake.

After that I buttoned up the wiring and reinstalled the overhead console. Looks like an OE fit now:

Hope you find this useful, this was an easy 30 mins to an hour mod. Useful and functional to boot!

I have a homelink unit on my way as well, still haven't decided where I want to put it, this is a good idea though, what wire did you tap into for it? I know the feeling on the two week old and already cutting into it thing.

Just the map lights circuit. White is 12v+ and White/Black is GND. I couldn't imagine the module pulling much current.

I looked all over the dash and couldn't find a place. My backup place was the silver part of the console. I saw one install that tried that and it looked good.

Awesome mod. I'm watching two eBay actions. Hopefully I won't be bidding against any of you; that would suck.

It's the grey one. Powering it is really easy. Pop the console out and there will be two connectors just like the OP showed you in the fourth picture from the top. One connector goes to the compass and temperature gauge (if you have them), the other is a two-wire connector going into the map lights.

The two wires are white. Get yourself quick splices from Walmart and hook into them. One wire is ground and one is +12V. (The ground one has a black line on it).

If you put it where I did you'll have to fill the space behind the module with some hard foam. Sorry, I have no pics because I basically used this thread as my how-to.

In case you are looking for something a little different, an autodimming rearview mirror with homelink for Tacos is also available thru various sources.
