vent ductwork question

I just noticed when I run the defrost I also get full force of air out of the two outer most vents by the windows

is this normal? I never had any other vehicle ductwork act like this and it doesn't make much sense to take air pressure away from the windshield defrost vents to direct it onto the driver and passenger like that.

if its normal then that is just fine, as long as I know its supposed to be that way, but if its not normal then where should I be looking at to see what door or control is not acting correctly?

does anyone elses truck do this?

 

My 2012 does the same thing, no matter what selection you have it on the two outside vents by the windows are always blowing air too, guess its to defrost your side windows 24/7.

 

very strange design indeed but now that I am looking at it, we don't have those extra "small" vents on the side of the dash to blow on the side windows like other cars and trucks have so it must be for defrosting the side windows.

wish there was a selector to defrost without the side vents, it sucks having to manually close those vents to use the defroster but I don't want it blowing on me, just the windshield.

this also answers why the side vents have a way to be turned off
