I just bought a 2002 Tacoma TRD SR5 4x4 double cab. I'm curious as to how big of tires the the diff. gears can handle without causing damage. The truck currently has 265/75/16 tires on it, but stock tires were 265/70/16.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

38.5x1450 were the biggest I've seen on a stick drivetrain.

265/75/16 is the largest size you can run without a lift, you will get a slight rub on the frame up front. Never heard of any diff issue with those.

You can't go bigger then 33s. Any bigger and the truck just won't turn them well. With 35s I couldn't even use 5th gear at all.

I had a buddy running 35s and grenaded his diff... I'm running 33s and haven't had a problem. 33s (285/75/16 or 285/70/17)are a very common size around TW.

I've noticed an issue with it while making a sharp turn either direction in 4H. It acts like something is binding up and it takes a bit of acceleration to get it to move. Any ideas what it could be? I'm thinking cv axles may be bad. I've had the truck a total of 5 days so i have no idea what its been through.

Just 4wd man. Turning with axles is hard work.

That's also why the bigger tire..the more likely you are to break cvs.

the fronts are slinging quite a bit of grease so that's what made me think they may be worn out in there.

If they're "slinging grease" the boots are torn. Need to be replaced...
