If that didn't help, may be the slave. Or internal after that, sorry to say.

Master and slave were replaced along with clutch and pressure plate...
It seems better but no one I know who has a standard thinks this is normal (they don't drive a tacoma though). Maybe it is normal for a tacoma but it doesn't seem right. The manual says to warm up the vehicle by driving it yet it isn't really drivable when cold because the clutch is so stiff that it's hard to tell when it's going to engage.

Thanks to all for their feedback and input so far.

I've driven trucks with manuals for 27 years. Normal to me.

Hmm that is somewhat reassuring. Have you ever driven manual cars? Do cars have the same stiffness? It doesn't seem as though my sister's Honda Accord gets stiff and slow to return.

It is normal with hydraulic clutches. Once it warms up a bite, it will be fine. i have seen in many times over the years including 3 ton trucks

Hmm I guess I'll talk to my dealer and live with it. It's my first tacoma/real truck (I'm not counting my Ranger which was less than half the cost).

Thanks all for the feedback. Hopefully this thread will help others who encounter the same thing.

It looks like this thread has had lots of useful info. But I'll add my experience.

At low temps (have had down to around -40C/F) the clutch is quite soft and slow, but definitely doesn't stick or pop. Within a few minutes of driving it warms up. I don't mind as it helps remind me to drive slow while she warms up.
