I've had great success with the Yakima Q-Towers on both an 04 double cab and my new 14 double cab.

I've driven 12 hours to the Buffalo National River in Arkansas (several times) with 3 12-14ft kayaks on the rack (roughly 175 lbs.) and it performed great on both the highway and dirt roads in the Ozark Mountains.

If you install the Q tower setup properly it will stay put through just about anything. I've seen some instances of the towers sliding a half inch or so on the roof, but it was likely due to improper install.

I assume the Thule system works pretty well also, but I liked the round crossbars more personally. They seem to be more durable.

I am finally going to replace my OEM bars and BajaRack basket with the PrInSu design rack plus Heretic Studios 40" light bar. I'm glad I waited so long to replace my original setup given the group buy going on right now. Perfect time to make the change. :D
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/group-buys/364794-prinsu-roof-rack-group-buy.html

When I installed the OEM bars I remember some orange or yellow piece in the front that seemed easy to damage if you aren't careful. Anyone have tips on how to remove the the bars without damaging this piece? I want to sell the bars and basket.

Bumping this older thread. I'm looking at the Baja flat rack, however had a question pop up. it seems that if you're going to mount a light bar on it, it will no longer be flat from back to front, as there is no way to recess the lightbar at or below the top of the rack?

Am I right on this end? Really, utility rack is useful for being flat from back to front, but this makes me stop and think...

    help?

    for example:

If I were to do it, I'd bolt the light bar on just after the wind deflector, it would take up about 2" of the "flat" space. i.e. 60" flat space vs. 58" flat space +light bar.

^what he said. There's even light mounting tabs in that section of the rack. Otherwise you could mount it lower, in front of the wind deflector, but it would take some custom mounts. Another option would be to cut a hole in the wind deflector (or remove it altogether) and mount the bar there. Again mounting may be tricky. I had thought of mounting a single row 48" bar flush into the wind deflector. It would be bad ass, but would take some involved fab work.

My only concern is if I want to have something on there that extends over the front of the truck (e.g., canoe, raft, etc), having that bar on there in the front section would make it impractical. Having a canoe rest on the bar would kind of ruin the point of the flat rack.

    thanks gents.

Not sure about baja flat rack but I've seen a guy on TW with a Rigid LB mounted to a FrontRunner Slimline II on the front flush. That is how I will be doing mine someday.

Ya I'm between the Prinsu, Frontrunner and Baja. Baja is easy as I can get it in town. Frontrunner is damn pricey

In that case, I would build a pair of small risers to clear the light bar, bolt it down to the rack and let the canoe rest on that. Alternatively, do what ffdawson recommended and bolt it to the 1" tubing on the deflector. Either way it's doable.

That is bad ass! Very clean!

In need of a flat/low profile rack I can attach to thule crossbars on an access cab. I have a MX series mid rise shell. Im trying to stay as even as possible with the shells roof line. I feel puttin a basket would put me way over the shell. Any suggestions?

From what I understand it was a prototype. I wish it was available. Looks to be exactly what I need.
