Just for kicks in giggles, has anyone else seriously thought about what they will do if the new 2016 Tundra's are offered with a Cummins 5.0L Diesel? I know for those who are on a borderline between full size truck or the Tacoma this might be the tipping point. I have talked with many different local Ford/GM owners and they all seem to agree that if Toyota follows suit in a diesel engine for the Tundra that GM/Ford might be in trouble. It is rumored that Ford is testing a new power stroke for the F150, seems like these EPA regulations are really going to change the playing field! What is everyone else's thoughts. I think I personally would trade up to the Tundra.

Traded the Taco for a 4Runner last April.

But, if the Tundra is offered with a diesel when I purchase my next vehicle, I would buy it because it's a diesel as opposed to the Tacoma.

    Isn't the Tundra a 1/2 ton truck? I think I've heard a salesman tell someone it's a 1/2 ton truck with a 3/4 ton frame or something?

I dont really have any need for a full size or a diesel so I would pass.
If I had a gas Tundra (or another brand full-size) and towed often I would be more likely to think about a trade.

To me asking if someone would trade a tacoma for a tundra diesel is about the same as asking if I would trade my tacoma for a mustang. Apples to oranges.

yes to the first question, and I am not sure on the second one. I know Toyota boasts something along those lines due to the way the tow hitch is "imbedded" sort of speak into the frame instead of just a bolt on.

Like some said, there would be no need for a bigger truck unless you use it. However I have a feeling if Toyota does follow suit it will be a very fuel efficient turbo diesel atleast compared to some. If it was a little better then the Tacoma I would be very prone to trading up. why?
1.) when hauling or towing you don't lose mpgs like you would with gasoline
2.) engines are proven to run longer. that 5.0 from cummins is documented to have an engine that has went 1mil miles on simply oil changes. (don't get me wrong I'm not sure on the parameters during this test, just found it from an article from cummins I was reading earlier)
3.) Engine is from Indiana (where I live)
4.) More room for family/future family
5.) 300HP 500LBS Torq is what the engine puts out alone.
I don't know, don't get me wrong I love my Toyota, sometimes you just get into that pinch and wish your truck was slightly bigger. This would probably be the only full size truck I would trade up to just because Toyotas hold their resale value and have proven reliability that is unmatched.

It definitely has a 3/4 ton axle. A 10.5"

I wouldn't. If I'd go diesel I would go ram 2500 for the 6.7 and manual tranny.

I would think anyone on the border of purchasing a full size truck from a Tacoma, they would of already purchased the Tundra. I do not think the diesel Tundra will tip the Tacoma market.
You either need a diesel or you don't imo. I would assume 75% or more Tundra owners already get what they need in terms of size and power. The Tundra diesel will target the Ford, GM, Dodge diesel market.

Yes I would based on several factors. Number one how much could I get on my taco for a trade in/private sale. Dont really want another car payment. Second The diesel tundra would be perfect for the Colorado market. Most of the guys I know, me included, are not pulling loads heavier than the truck frame and suspension will carry but the N/A gas motors have a tough time getting the job done at elevation. A half ton turbo diesel solves this problem without me, or people like me having to buy a 3/4 ton which is way overkill and can be a pain to park in the city.
