i just pulled my AP bumper off of my Tacoma.
i'm getting it line x'd and installing a new Smitty bilt 9,500 winch.
just wondering where would be the best place to mount the solenoid
for easy access to plug in the remote?

with this bumper the winch is pretty much in closed. making it difficult to get to.

since it is water proof i'm thinking about mounting it on top of the bumper.
over top of the license plate and against the grill

You could mount it between the air intake tube and the abs block if you get long enough wire. You can also mount somewhere in front of the radiator between it and the frame. I personally plan on eventually mounting mine in the engine compartment and bringing the controls in the cab, or even wireless.

This is where i mounted mine. still allows me enough room for my aux battery whenever i get around to making a tray for it. the only thing i dont like is having the remote going over the intake... just doesn't look as clean as i would like. mine is supposed to be waterproof too, but it's not a Warn so im not taking any chances. plus the whole reason i have bumper with a hidden winch is so everything can be hidden and i dont have to stare at a solenoid box sitting on my bumper.

If you're using a wireless remote, don't mount it in the engine compartment. That will shorten the usable range of the remote. Your idea of mounting it on top of the bumper would be best in that case.

i gave the engine compartment some thought.
i would have plenty of room considering that i have a K&N intake system.
but my remote is not wire less. and i do not want to have to raise the hood everytime that
    i use the winch.

i do like the idea of the solenoid being protected under the hood.
out of sight is also a +
