Old topic, but I'm wondering if anybody sweats this issue? I used to adjust the valves myself on an old Honda Accord I had, and it was a real PITA. I had a mechanic friend of mine adjust the valves on my '95 4 Runner with the old 'hockey puck' shims, and it was a major job. I don't believe our second gens have those. Anyway, Is this a, if it aint broke, don't fix it deal until your around 180K?

Have uploaded the procedure to check and adjust valve clearances on a 2nd Gen Tacoma. See link below. Read thru it; then ask yourself if you really believe any dealer out there would go thru all of this and not cause a problem with your truck.

Many of them can't do the 5K-25K ToyotaCare services w/o phucking up. I can't even imagine what shape a persons truck would be in after they attempted this task. I will do this myself at 60K if I feel the need to.

 Thanks Lester. It's far worse than I thought!! As long as I'm still not burning a drop of oil, I'll pass.

The lifters themselves are of varying thickness, printed on the bottom of them, I thought I got a pic of the bottom when I was doing my HG, but I guess I didn't. These are the lifters and the cams, to adjust them you would replace the lifter based on the feeler mentioned earlier.

Here is from my build discussing the lifters:

After reading the PDF, the numbers I mentioned (37-45) correlate to the thickness per the chart, good info.

Read your manual, the check is sound not taking the engine apart. You can if you want but if there is no issue you are far better off leaving it alone.
