I bought the engo 10000s and got it for $429 shipped. Great reviews online and it did awesome in the 4wheel parts winch shoot out.

X3 on Keep saving. And personally I don't trust anything recommended by 4Wheel Parts. Their recommendations are driving 100% by advertising $.

I've seen harbor freight winches work for many years. If the reviews look good then why not give it a chance.

A winch is the one thing I wouldn't recommend skimping on, it could mean the difference between driving out of the woods and walking out. You need to be able to depend on it when you're in the absolute worst possible situation, and that's exactly when a budget winch will fail.

I love my smittybilt 9500 xrc comp. I bought it new in box for 300 on craigslist, then swapped out the grease. Great winch, cost effective, synthetic line, waterproof. Otherwise I'd buy a ~$1000 Warn.

    Daily driver or trail rig?

If a daily driver, that winch will get more abuse just sitting on your bumper doing nothing. I've killed three winches and each one did no more than 10 pulls. Michigan winters are hard as hell with all the salt being blown into them constantly. On my daily drivers, I put t h e cheapest I can find. Harbor Freight winches are just fine for me.

If the winch is going on a dedicated trail rig, I have no issue spending the big dollars. It will be used in its designed environment.

If you are doing research, find out which ones have replaceable motors, the motors are the thing that fails. In many cases you can't find a motor cheaper than you can buy a whole new winch for.

Have you looked at the used route? I see quite a few name brand winches selling for cheap on Craigslist regularly.

Sometimes they can be bought for nearly nothing since the owner didn't want to fool with a bad solenoid or something simple like that.
