Just take it easy, I get around 16.8 to 17.3 with mine in city driving.

Better gas mileage? Keep it under 2k rpm. Around 65MPH on the highway, and don't take off like you are trying to get a hole shot each time you leave a stop light or red light.

Smooth easy acceleration, and controlled driving will net you 18 to 20mpg.

Driving like a goon all the time will get you 16 17 most of the time.

But as its probably been said you buy a truck because you need a truck. You have the need to tow a trailer and/or haul stuff in your bed. You don't buy it to get great gas mileage. Because well that doesn't happen often. My buddy with his 2011 2500HD reg cab long bed 4x4 Duramax with a full emission delete(everything is gone) with a 6" exhaust on the highway gets much better fuel mileage than me. And his truck will tow 20k pounds.

I have a V6 4x4 and i can't seem to get less than 17.6 mpg driving it hard. Usually get 18-20 depending on winter/summer fuel.
That said, I'm running stock size AT tires, no lift/heavy mods and regular maintenance

Just switched back to summer fuel in OR on March 1'st. MPG's back up again. I've NEVER gotten 14-16. Average is 19.5. Best was 24.

Gotta love it. I'm on my third taco and they've all been in the ballpark, mpg wise. I could probably do better if I drove slower but it's just not that big a deal to me. Glad to hear summer gas is returning though.

I don't think I'll ever see 17mpg again. If you want decent mpg, don't modify your truck. Just keep an eye on your foot.

V-6 Prerunner with 6sp and 245/75-16 tires 54k miles over 5 years. Keep tires at 33#. Average 19 city and 21 highway in winter, 20/22 or so summer. 67mph is 2450rpm, wish I could keep it to 2000, but ain't going to happen on the interstate. ScanGauge (calibrated) helps me pay attention. For city driving, pick your routes if possible, minimize rush hour, street lights, combine trips. Fuelly average is 19.2 over last 10 fillups.
