I have a 99 Single Cab Tacoma PreRunner with a 3RZ motor with 224,000 orignal miles on motor and trans, My question is should I keep it and put money in it to make it look good or do a rebuild when the motor goes out or sell it and get a 4x4 tacoma and put money in that..Ive had this prerunner for 2 years now the body is completely brand new and I love it but the miles arnt going down and I want to rebuild it cause the body is brand new but I also have this thought in my mind its not 4x4 so why put money in it to make it look nice..I just have a hard time deciding I really want to lift my tacoma and put 33's on it but then again im lifting a 2wd truck which in my mind isnt bad but in others is a waster of money... Just give me your personal opinion on the topic so I know what to do

as long as you change the oil when you should these engines can sometimes go 500k miles so no worries and relax. its still got another 200k miles to go before I would be thinking engine rebuild time.

as for the 4wd, if you are handy with tools you can convert yours over to 4wd and many suggest it can be done for under $2000 sometimes closer to $1000

search the forum and you will see posts about it

A personal choice a lot of us have made at one time or another. Unless you want to build a classic, an older rig eventually becomes a money pit, and sometimes it gets old pouring money into it, and having something else break as soon as you just spent another grand on it. You have to weigh how much your willing to spend before you get really tired of it, or perhaps looking at what little an insurance company would give you in the event of a wreck. Older Tacos always have a buyer out there. If you sold it, you could come up with a good down payment on something newer. Your paying either way, but spending less time under the hood, and you have the satisfaction of something newer.

if you get rid of it you will regret it forever and then go buy a worse truck in an attempt to get back close to what you had.

if this were an American brand then yes I would agree with the advice that keeping an old vehicle is a money pit, but these trucks are not like that, they last forever, cost virtually nothing to own, and in most cases will outlive us.

    just my 2 1/2 cents

As long as then engine and tranny are fine, no need to rebuild. Saw a guy with 600k miles on his. Late oil changes, and not much maintenance. Finally ended at around 670k when his truck was totaled. Now, if your truck, like mine, has a lot of issues, you might just want to find another truck.

What makes you think it needs rebuilt in the near future? 224k? That's nothing. I bet you don't even have to add any oil between oil changes. Seriously, timing belts, water pumps and brakes and tires are the only thing you need to worry about.

Take that future car payment and sock it away every month. 2-3 yrs down the road, then think about replacing the truck. As for 4x4, do you really need it? I actually need mine 2-3 times a year, I bet you are way less than that.

You can do lots of repairs for the cost of 1 car payment. Fuck car payments!
