Grid-It Center Console Lid Organizer - No Drilling!

The feeling is mutual; I just finished up fabbing up my Hi-Lift/Axe bed bracket inspired by your plans.

Seems a bit overcomplicated. Just wanted to update you all that the velcro has held up with no problems whatsoever. I have wheeled it hard and bounced the truck several times - even to where the bed cubby compartments fall out - and the Grid-It and the items it is holding did not budge. I was actually really skeptical at the velcro adhesive's ability to adhere to the fabric of the Grid-It, but so far so good. Just have to wait for summer and 100+ degree temps for the final test.

 

I know that Gorilla Glue makes these thin "tapes" that are incredibly strong. I have an entertainment center with glued-in pieces of stone as decoration that are about 3"x6" each and two fell out in shipping. Gorilla Glue tape has held them for 3 years. It works great on uneven surfaces too. I'm just thinking that I'd probably never want to take the Grid-It with me out of the truck so a more permanent solution may be for me.


OH- and I had one of those little black plastic roof trim rail pieces come off over the rear window- Gorilla Glue to the rescue!

 

Thanks for the idea Sachou. I bought one and installed it with industrial strenghth velcro last night (which worked well). My only problem is my console shuts hard now. Did anyone trim there Grid-it and if so how much?

Just ordered this. what's the consensus on cutting off the back pocket? I'm thinking i'm going to go ahead and do that.

 

It's pretty much useless once you mount it, and would be a pain to mount if it was still there, so definitely cut it off.

 

Yes, cut into the fringe until just before you get to the rubber strap part, and bend it away. Then take a flame and sear up the frayed bits.



I just got my Salex Organizer in, and confirm that it fits great with room to spare. I can even fit a C Cell Flashlight, and a Otter Box Pursuits 20 in between the two.

 

Installed the Grid-it recently and enjoy it.
Same install method as the OP---notch the edge for the console lid hinges, remove the pocket, and use a heavy Velcro which allows for removal if ever needed.
I prefer it for smaller items which otherwise can be difficult to find in the console.

I feel like half a tard.... I notched mine all the way to the stitching and it still doesnt stick. I then bent it to follow the contours inside of the lid. I used 2" heavy duty velcro. And now the velcro doesn't fit. And it still won't close. Next step is to notch out about a 5" length because the latch on the lid "kicks in" about 1/4".

As for the velcro, it sticks like mad to the Grid It but not to the inside of the lid. I've tried two different types. Any way you could take a pic of the box of Velcro you bought?

Oh, and I recommend bending the Grid It. I have it with a slight "s" shape and now it fits right up against the inside of the lid. If only I can get the Velcro to stick!

 

This is how I've cut mine.

 

I even bought the extra heavy duty velcro they show attaching a fire extinguisher to the wall... No stick to the lid at all.

Sorry to hear you guys are having trouble getting it to stick. That's the thing with adhesives - most of the time it just doesn't stick, especially to plastic, but I never had any trouble with the velcro I have. I don't have the original box for it, as I just had some laying around from another project. I bought it at Walmart ages ago, and it's a super heavy duty velcro that's really hard to bend, and really thick. It's more robust than any other hook and loop I've ever seen. This looks like the right product, but I can't be sure:

Make sure you get the 2" wide velcro. I got some 1" wide velcro laying around, and it is definitely not the same product. Maybe you can try some 3M mounting tape.

 

So i got mine in yesterday installed today along w the Salex and while at the store for some velcro found this led light bar with a push button switch. Diameter is as large as a Crayola Marker , came with batteries for approx. 11 bucks. I just ran it through a couple loops and its nice and snug. May open it up and deconstruct it to try and create a pressure switch and put the batteries in a pack and run them inside the console ....stay tuned

had no problems with mine attaching as the adhesive is very strong. maybe consider scuffing up the lid with a coarse sandpaper to help?

nice find. which store did you find it at? and where is the switch located?

 

Sofiasdad, that's the EXACT box of velcro I bought at Home Depot. I attached the soft loop part to the grid it and it's as solid as can be. I attached the hard plastic loop part to the lid and it just about falls off.
Did you do yours the other way? I'm wondering if the loop part of the Velcro would stick to the lid better....
