If I was in the market for a first gen and the price was right Id buy it. The one thing Davis auto does well is making an older vehicle shine like a new penny.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for. An extended cab, manual and mostly stock. Plus it will look great next to my Dcab.

Yeah, dents all over the tailgate of a "clean" and "flawless" truck. Want it fixed? They'll fix it. But they are going to charge you an additional $500 to do it.

They are already asking 18k for the truck!

How much does a tailgate cost?

$18000 is too much money. That’s not too far away than what it went for brand new.

Find a junk yard tailgate, paint it white done.

    Truck MSRP'd for $20,000 - $21,000 new.

And that was with no miles and ZERO RUST....

Honestly, If they were asking 16k I might be stupid enough to buy it.

Paid $20k for my 2004 4x4 TRD Xtra Cab about a year and a half ago, had 24k miles on it at the time (TRD supercharged/headers as well).

Expensive? Yes. Too much for a 13 year old truck? Depends on who you ask. I wanted a first gen Tacoma because I wanted a compact pickup (no one makes them anymore), and I wanted the simplicity of them. Plus, they're proven reliable. So it was well worth the money for me to wait for one with rare low mileage to come along.

24k miles and supercharged? That is pretty awesome.

If it were me I would of questioned the 24k miles. How in the actual hell does a pickup truck sit that long for that many years without being driven!?

I know, I know. Sounds like a personal problem right? Well maybe it is.

Maybe I have seen one too many shady dealers posing as private sellers trying to sell some POS truck they found at an auction for 5k and then they turn around and try to get 10k for it....

Not knocking your decision brother because ultimately you are correct. If you want something bad enough, well it is worth what ever price you can personally justify.

It was definitely a concern for me when I first saw the listing, but it all checked out. Plus, it wasn't being sold through a shady one-off small used car lot, it was for sale at a Toyota dealership (Mossy Toyota) in San Diego. They assured me they had checked it out to verify the mileage, Toyota doesn't need a liability like that on their hands (selling a vehicle with odometer fraud). All the Carfax reports were in sync as well.

It spent it's whole life in a garage in Arizona, which was another big plus (no frame or paint issues at all). Of course, with all the 4x4 trips I've been on in the last couple of years it's not exactly in showroom condition anymore, lol. But it was exactly what I wanted and I was willing to pay for it. It was right around KBB and NADA value; 1st gens have crazy resale value, as we all know.

BTW there's a thread on here for people to show off their low mileage first gens, and there's a member on the thread that found a 1st gen (forget what year) with only 500 or so miles on the odometer. Was tucked away in a barn and hadn't been driven in forever, looked brand new. Crazy find.

Sounds like your truck hit all of the checks!

If i could find something like that at a local Toyota dealership, I might be willing to pay the premium as well.

But a private seller? Forget it. Too much risk, too many unknowns, and people are full of crap these days.

Indeed they are. Also, it's worth mentioning that older vehicles with low mileage are not always 'like new' even if they look like it; sometimes low mileage can be a bad thing if the truck was rarely driven; moving parts like that aren't meant to sit unused for years at a time. I had a few little quirks to iron out on my truck but nothing major; any of the hefty maintenance/repairs I've had to make were mostly due to 4x4'ing and such.

I am sure a lot of the rubber bits looked pretty dried out. I am well aware that vehicles need to be driven every so often to keep things pliable. As they say "Use it or lose it" right?

    Here's a sub-100k x-cab from a small internet dealer in FL: https://jacksonville.craigslist.org/ctd/d/2004-toyota-tacoma-extended/6474010541.html
Dealer says it is one-owner from same area in FL (Jax). Dealer acted dumb when I asked if the recall inspects (frame & spare tire) had been completed. Carfax has 32 service records on it- dealer hasn't sent it to me yet. There are several other 1st gen x-cabs with much higher mileage (and much lower price) within 10 miles of this one, so I'll be making the 2-hr drive this week to check them out.
