That’s using heavier weight oil or just having problems with engagement?

 

They (Aisin) were very generic when answering questions, they don’t like talking to consumers. I was told that it was likely that our cases were assembled in S. Carolina and that parts were sourced from U.S. and abroad is how they put it.

 

This paper is far from perfect (political)... and deals with the LV 75W, which the LF is very likely based upon. The comparisons go back and forth between the old convential 75W90 MTF, a Group III, and a PAO. The additives are there to take over when the thin oil can no longer do the job of maintaining a barrier.

 

So I'll probably still just go with the OEM 75W oil for the transfer case when I change it next year. Yes it's fecking expensive ($80) but I don't put a ton of miles on the truck so I'd only be buying it maybe every 4 years.

But I was on Motul's website scoping out their 75W-85 for the diffs and what they recommended for the auto trans. I went to their "Oil Selector" page and for the "Transfer Box" as they call it they recommend their MULTI-DCTF fluid. It's GL-4 rated. And in their Technical Data Sheet I found this listed:

Toyota LF , Toyota LV 75W MT , JWS 2271 , 0888581001

Can be found on Amazon for $20/liter.

That was going from the Royal purple syncromax to the ravenol 75w MTF-3. I honestly never noticed an issue going from factory filled LF to syncro until I refilled with ravenol. I was constantly switching back and forth just to get the damn thing To stop beeping.

 

I don’t know why anyone would be trying to save $50, with so much at stake. I originally went to 75W90 because I could not buy the LF fluid at my dealer and they told me they use bulk 75W90. Later they started carrying the fluid so I went back after having problems with the 75W90. Maybe I wasn’t the only one with issues, so the dealer had to start stocking the LF cans.

 

I checked with them about that a few weeks back (October 7th). They replied quickly and said that they do not have a product for our T cases:




I am not exactly certain why, but I do not think that LV and LF are the same?

This is a good thread. It might be helpful to list the confirmed fluids in the 1st Post? I'm seeing Toyota LF, Ravenol, and Motul? I agree with @Stocklocker 's VOA comparo between Toyota LF and Ravenol.

 

Side note, the technical discussions are so much nicer, organized and thoughtful. Never going back to the lift threads lol

Ravenol seems to be working for me. Just drove to Vegas and didn't grenade the T-case so we'll see. Unless we get some concrete info I'll probably just roll with it.

NBD. I just wanted to cover the terms.

I have that PDF (attached) and initially discounted it as it dates to 2014 in the file name when downloaded. Although, @Jeff Lange pointed to LF's initial usage in 2010.

 

I find it very interesting that the 3rd gens have a different tcase, under my buddies 2019 the other day changing rear gear oil and I definietly noticed the different actuators, but the physical case looked identical (id imagine its a different model due to maybe an input shaft change and actuators, but gears inside are likely the same given low range ratio is identical). Im surprised as to the hard shifting though (possibly due to different actuators?) as i have NEVER had a problem on my 2nd gen with the same

75w-90 mobil 1 gear oil i use in the front and rear diffs. even at low temps of of 10deg and under.
