How can it be both 70W and 75W, while not being multigrade? Honest question.

Here's what a CLS acquaintance recently told me...

"A straight 75w doesn't really exist in today's API frame work. Mostly because anything with a PAO is naturally multi-viscosity. What Toyota calls this vs what it really is, two different things. But this is a purpose built fluid. Redline also makes the MT LV that crosses roughly to the Ravenol MT3 product. It would be a little heavier than the 75w85, as it's a 70/75w90 - it's cold weight differs as it's a PAO/ester. It would work fine as well and it's gold metal safe. So that would alleviate any concerns of brass or silver in there.I can dig into this a bit later. You have my curiosity now."

So a good baseline here for compatibility would be GL-4
And 75wt single grade correct ?

Not to hijack ...... the Castrol
    Syntrans FE 75w
    Or
Syntrans B 75w may be acceptable also

So I can possibly go all Castrol

Maybe I am misreading but where did he get the (SAE) 90 viscosity part?

Probably from data sheets showing viscosity @100°C. Redline is a sister company to his, so...

SAE Viscosity Grade (Gear Oil) 70W/75W
    Vis @ 100°C, cSt 6.5

Not close. That's why I think maybe he is talking about the Ravenol product????

    Ravenol is cSt 7.06...don't know.

It looks like Redline does in fact call out MT-LV 70/75 as an LF substitute. That's news to me.

Being told that a 75w??? was fine to use and it’s all the same, was why I started digging for info on the LF75W and the transfer cases. At 100*C a 70w has a min Cst of about 3.6 and a 75w is 4.1, not a very big difference there,it is labeled as a multi-grade.The next grade change is at 7 Cst to a 80 grade.
A mono grade oil is not the same as a multi-grade. A 75w at 100*C will range from 4.1 to 6.9 Cst and a 75w90 at 100*C will range from 13.5 to 18.4 Cst, lets just say 3 times as viscous and the colder you go the bigger the difference

I think I need a reset. What is the actual 100°C viscosity of the Toyota labeled product?

    @seecjackson
Thanks for the discussion, I ordered the redline oil and I guess we’ll see how it goes.

Some people get worried the about the brass in the transfer case and GL-4 vs GL-5
I'm still considering the Castrol 75wt myself

Skydvrr and Stocklocker report transfer case shifting issues with 75W-90. :notsure:

Anyway, the Red Line LV fluid is reasonably priced. Having to stock another unique fluid at home is a nuisance, but that's about it. Either way I won't have to worry about it until 2022.
