‘22 Tacoma Head Unit failed

Title says it all. Appointment with Toyota next Tuesday, I’ll update. But I’d like your thoughts:

Driving home from work last night and the screen went blank. Got home and tried to manually reset the head unit (hold down volume button, etc) - nothing…. turned truck on/off… nothing.

The backup camera still works so I guess the head unit isn’t totally bad… I’m sure I could try other methods of resetting but regardless it’s getting looked at since I still have the factory warranty.

Anyone else experience similar issues?

Welcome to the crappy world of the Toyota radios. Toyota has had their fill of radio problems from the famous rebooting all the time to the audio cutting out and eventually die. If you have warranty make them replace it but beware you might get a refurbished unit like I did unknowingly. Have had a number of these units apart to replace components notably the audio chip. I find that a lot of them come down to moisture damage on the boards, cooling and heating in the cab or if in the winter and your in the snow belt, excess snow in the mats melt and cause high humidity. Now most of the electronics are sealed the radio is not. My current radio is back to rebooting every 30 seconds but I can put it in reverse and the camera comes on and will stay on with no rebooting. Classic moisture damage on the audio card in the unit. About a year after I bought the truck new the radio went and the dealer replaced it with a NAV unit, didn’t come with it initially but said this is what Toyota sent them. Fast forward a few years and it starts doing the same thing, no warranty left. So I took it out to see if maybe a cable had come loose, sticker on the radio says Toyota refurbished unit, go figure. Turned out to be a bad solder joint on a chip.

Yes but took them out shortly thereafter - had nothing but issues with them. I will check the fuse box again to make sure everything looks okay. But that was years ago!

 

Wow, lucky it went now instead of after the warranty.
