One thing I had a 04 gen 1 the interior was almost identical to the Corolla, I looked at the 05 gen 2 it had a similar interior as a matrix. I chose 1 of the dealers remaining gen 1's. I haven't really checked out the interiors of other models to see if the gen 3 has any similar interiors.

Yeah the interiors all felt the same in the cars vs the trucks there for awhile. Think the 3rd is a stand alone. It does remind me slightly of the early eighties trucks, with a more of horizontal dash, no center pod and round vents.

I really like the 3rd gen Tacoma interior. Nice and clean, just modern enough, without looking like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise.

    It’s tasteful.

It is my favorite so far, nice and basic without going over the top. Besides of course a 40 Series, or even an early 70 Series.

I hear you on the starship enterprise! Lol!

I was in a friends new Ram recently. I could not believe the dash. It was nut-balls. Too much for my tastes.

Toyota's aluminum blocks don't typically use spray-in liners, early engines used pressed-in 2 mm cast iron liners (1UZ). Toyota started using cast-in-place liners about 6-7 years later in engines like the ZZ. The 3UZ switched to using 1.5 mm liners in the early 2000's but were still pressed-in.

All GR engines cast the block with the liners in place, yes.

Honing the liners is acceptable, and Toyota does list the tolerance. Interestingly, they increased the tolerance from the 1GR even though the standard bore is the same tolerance. (1GR max is 94.132 mm).

Standard Bore Diameter: 94.000 to 94.012 mm (3.7008 to 3.7013 in.)
Maximum Diameter: 94.200 mm (3.7087 in.)

You may be able to go a tad beyond that, but Toyota's official stance is don't go beyond +0.200 mm over.

You can still bore the entire liner out and press in a new non-spiny type liner if you really needed to, as @Empty_Lord mentioned.

Toyota published an SAE paper on the development of the 2GR/7GR-FKS and the development of a common engine platform that could be easily repurposed for varying applications. There are three distinct variants, the FF variant, the FR passenger car variant, and the FR "commercial" variant. For instance, part of that development was to develop VVT-i cam gears with a wider operating range so that the valve timing can be varied significantly between the variants without the need for differing parts.

That said, the 2GR-FKS in the Tacoma shares a lot with the other variants obviously, but there are also distinct physical differences beyond just tuning. For instance the block is thicker in certain areas, with different mounting points, and a different bolt pattern for the transmission (conveniently, the same pattern as the 1GR).

I am actually convinced the engine in the Tacoma was originally intended to be called the 7GR-FKS, as it is in other markets/products, but that it shared enough with other 2GR-FKS vehicles to be able to skip some US certifications or something by calling it a 2GR-FKS instead. Initial documents from Toyota before release stated the engine would be the 7GR, but at release it was listed as the 2GR instead. All other markets that use the engine call it a 7GR-FKS.

Though it does seem people don't think it worked, but the difference in power/torque curves between the variants is quite pronounced.

    Jeff
