ok chapter 3-1 of the manual and 3-2 to disable the remote. Thanks for busting my chops - I deserve it, didn't think the manual was so thorough

Why do you want to keep it without a battery installed?

Clearly you are NOT a TRUE engineer. We "true engineers" just wing it and have large collections of leftover bolts and washers from our builds.

Check your blinker fluid, too. Be sure to ask the desk people at NAPA if you need help.

So as not to kill the battery. Smarter to just deactivate the fob, which @99 10 11 19 Tacos figured out in a follow up post.

    This thread hurts my brain

my truck is a 2017 and I just replaced the batteries in both remotes for the first time. I guess I just don’t see why you would bother when you get 6 years of life and can have the spare ready to go. Even if it was 2 years between battery changes..

It takes 3 clicks to deactivate a key. And also deactivates the signal, keeping away snoopers.

nice. A much better solution than leaving it without a battery in it then!

    I'm deprived.
Mine has a key lock on the door, and an ignition key.

Not necessarily deprived. One theft-method is to scan the "constant seeking" signal from the key-fob (to find the truck) then duplicate and take the truck. I only know the method exists, but not exactly how to do it. Others are much better equipped to do this without people knowing.

    Sometimes "simpler" is safer.

Someone needs to test to see if an fob without a battery will start their truck by placing it next to the push to start button and pushing it. If it does then they need to see if the truck will lock with a no battery fob inside. There may come a day when I want to lock it inside with a key.

That is a huge assumption that someone can find the key and more importantly know how to actually use it. People call manuals "millennial theft protection" I think this is Gen Z theft protection -

    I was being facetious. :D

According to the magazine reviewers, I must be one of those dinosaur Luddites who actually LIKE their Tacoma.
They pick on the basic plastic interior as tacky, lack of "tech" and low-rider seats without power controls.
They call the 6 speed automatic as "sluggish" and it has a poor drag race performance.

    Really.
Who gives a shit about drag racing in a truck?

What I really wanted was a new Hilux with a stick shift, and not a "life style" truck for techie fan boys.
Toyota is apparently one of the few that still provides manual control over the automatic transmission.
Since I am stuck with the automatic (manual was Unobtanium in December of '23), I do SO appreciate manual gear selection in the AT.

This is great news for going down Priest Grade without riding the brakes.
And for around-town driving without the endless EPA mandated shifting.

In short, my 2023 SR with manual door and ignition key with all the derided anti-fanboy accoutrements is my kind of truck.

I like remote door, but the push-button start is not necessary. And the 360-view camera helped me get used to driving the Tacoma after my Corolla ... quite the adjustment.

I half thought you were joking ... but then who in here does not just adooore the sound of their own voice. :D

Dunno if you're being serious, but I often lock my key inside if I sleep inside the truck. Just lock the doors with the fob then disable it using the key press sequence.

Make sure to unlock the doors with the fob before opening a door! Don't be the asshole I was that time at 7am in the serenely quiet camp ground setting off the alarm! HONK HONK HONK...

Where did I put that god-damned key fob??

    Won't make that mistake twice...
