Yes ok- so their is a leer topper, not a camper shell. Husband did the wiring With a friend and yes the wiring for the 3rd break light is just dangling down looking kind of half assly done.
how do I go about fixing This?

We haven’t messed with the topper for a while - like months before the break issue happened- I suppose this doesn’t matter though like it could have taken a while to blow out the fuse , correct? anyway so is the issue with the way the 3rd light - the one on top of topper- is connected?

Yep, that would be a problem. LOL When the dangling power wire touches sharp metal, at the same time your husband pushes the brakes, and shorts out, it blows the fuse. The problem could also be behind the left tail light where the topper wires are spliced into the brake light wires.

BTW, camper shell, topper, shell, canopy, are all the same thing. Kind of like pop, soda, fountain drink, and virgin cuba libre.

Thanks for the lesson on truck synonyms

and I think maybe I found the culprit- one of the wires coming from taillight has definitely been pinched so the coating is removed - sorry for the dark picture - but could this exposed wire cause fuse to short out? The broken area defiantly rests on the tailgate and could very easily bump metal when he pushes the breaks.
if this is the issue would covering the wire with electrical tape be a sufficient fix?

Oh yeah, that would definitely do it. Wrapping with electrical tape and zip tying or taping the wires up so they're not dangling would solve the problem. In a perfect world, the wiring should be redone properly, but we're not talking about the guidance system for the international space station here.

    Wrap it, check for function.

Also, seeing as you already ordered the brake pedal switch, go ahead an replace it anyway. The contacts get worn out and they go bad eventually.

@Naveronski and @Muddinfun I can’t say thank you enough. Wire has been wrapped - it was exposed in two places, probably had been pinched in the tailgate- and I velcro’ed it all up out of the way.
I don’t know what it means to “check for function” - is this “ make sure the third light still works” in laymen terms? If yes I will do this with my husbands second set of eyes to help tomorrow. His work schedule has been 2am- 2pm lately so Its awesome I could help him out with this!

That’s exactly what I mean. Wrap the wire up and replace the fuse, then make sure everything works.

FYI, I’ve had to do this solo a few time. I set my phone to record video and put it where it could see the rear of my truck, then just pumped the brakes, and watched the video.

@L.Strong Good job getting everything all sorted out and letting us know the outcome. That means a lot to us. Post some pics of your truck when you get a chance.

that’s a great tip about videotaping when checking rear lights solo. I’ll remember that for the future! I ended up using my husband and all lights are fully functional !!! Thank you x 1000!

As requested this is my husband building up the back to make a sleeping area. He did this 2 summers ago and we have taken it west twice sleeping in the back when we wern’t in a good place or didn’t feel up to setting up the tent.
    I call the truck “Trent” , because he’s our truck/tent .

lol you can see the dangling wires for the topper light

I like the LED light on the left side. Those are pretty cool.
