No more fishing boat full of booze? Although, i think even your updated dream list is a bit too realistic for the gambit

I'll get world peace, a pony, and a spaceship long before this country runs a budget surplus.

Ponzi scheme collapses if you don't have more intakes than withdrawals.

But we'll find out in a few months anyways.

I think this is the most beautifully out-of-touch-upper-middle-class thing I've read in a while. I do not mean that with malice.

I just find the claim "You can't do anything on 80k a year!" in a country where the median household income is 65k a year to be silly.

Esp. when you consider that that 80k is net of health insurance and tax free (assuming a 65+ year old retiree on Medicare drawing long term capital gains). It would be like a working person bringing in 120k. Can you do anything with 190% of the median household income, or is that useless too?

That depends on where you live. And how much kids college is. He said 2 million to buy a “nice” house, kids through college and into their own apartments, and a retirement full of travel. You could easily have gone through half the money before you get to your full of travel retirement.

Sure, in an HCOL this doesn't go nearly as far.

Don't spend it in an HCOL.

The described desires are easily attainable with 2 million if one is a bit discretionary about how it is spent.

Buy the house on an ARM balloon mortgage and refinance that bitch before the balloon
hits each time. Rent an RV to travel the states. Travel internationally to places with favorable exchange rates, which is...everywhere but Switzerland right now. Contribute to kids college cost only if college makes sense (engineering degree at state school, not communications degree from Duke).

All you gotta do is keep your annual costs under 80k, inflation adjusted, and you are sustainable forever. That's a cakewalk.

you mean it’s a bad idea to let my kid go to LSU on my retirement dime for a liberal arts degree?

This assumes you win this 2 million lottery early enough for that. If you are 25, you’ll have your house paid off and your kids education funds ready to go on basically any salary if you make the effort to do so. You won’t need the lottery. And that’s the keystone light of retirement plans you are describing. @kairo wants a ticket on the penis rocket to almost space :D

Maybe, but she’ll have to lower her standards of living. I hope she likes cardboard walls.

Any salary in the the top 3 quartiles anyway, assuming responsible behavior.

I would argue those strategies, though, apply whether you build up $X from a lifetime or working or saving or land on it at a lump sum one day. $X is $X. I based the suggested strategies off the listed costs of the hypothetical.

Agreed, but I’ve already invested for the future. If I get a lump sum, I’m burning it on fun shit. Probably. But I won’t keep more than 15 million. I’ll give the other 400 million away on day one. Maybe dump it in cash from a plane :D

Edit: coins! Be way more fun. Cash and coins. Few gold bricks. Look out below

There's a social experiment. Gold bars from 15,000 feet, see who's desperate enough to risk a couple ingots in the cranium to move up a couple social classes.

I would say that's pretty dark, but I don't wanna be racist.

I saw someone suck milk from a goat tit and spit it into a glass until there was 8 ounces for their teammate to drink just for a chance to win 50k on fear factor. People are willing

Was said goat sedated or restrained in any way? If not that challenge might be a real PIA. Those fuckers are mean as hell.

Depends on the goat I imagine. We had a small herd (~10) when I was young. They lived cushy and were pretty docile.
