Since both cams are out the same amount, the most likely cause was the crank was in the wrong position.

I made sure to not move the cams or the crank when installing. Old belt came off and the new one went on.

Either way, it’s no harm no foul. Just have to line it up again. I always pull them through two full crank rotations in direction of rotation and then back to make sure nothing slips.

Cool. I'm glad this engine doesn't have piston and valve in the same place.

Most of our timing belt engines were non-interference. The VVt-i 4.7 and the 3.3 could bend a valve if their belt broke.

Since everything is out of line now, can I just set the cams and the crank to TDC individually (i.e. without a belt connecting them all together)?

Set the crank to #1 TDC before pulling the belt. If you don't know how to, then research how to.

Please don't take this the wrong way, what "stuff" besides the old, unpinned tensioner did you leave on? A timing belt job can be a pain in the ass when done correctly. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how you got the belt on with the tensioner still tensioning. Even with the marks not lining up. Pry bar?

I just saw you left the lower cover on. Anything else?

Yes you can. Pull your crank to the 0 mark and set the cams.

Probably the same way a lot of people do belts.
They leave the belt OFF one of the pulleys and pull the shit out of the belt, which compresses the the tensioner, but plays hell on all the other components the belt goes around. And is NOT the correct way to do it.

I’m not saying OP did it this way, but there’s ways of doing it.

Timing belt jobs seem doable. But they can go sideways when you don't know exactly what you are doing. Best to follow the factory service manual to the T.

    Done over a dozen timing belt jobs. 5vz, 2uz, 3.3 3mz, Honda 4 banger, Honda V6.

I took everything off when I did the actual belt change. When I got the pics (as post #2 asked) I only pulled off the top plastic cover. When I correct the timing again with a new tensioner, I will take everything off (fan clutch, plastic covers, tensioner)

Another suggestion. Stop making new threads for each problem regarding this timing belt job. Keep everything in 1 thread so we all know the whole story.

I know you already suggested me to change out the belt for another brand new one, but what percentage of risk am I taking by reusing this (fresh out of packaging) belt. I only did 3 cranks and they all lasted 5 second max.
