0w16 is the standard for 2018/2019 4 cylinder Camrys and the 2019 Rav-4. They sound like shit on startup where that film thickness isn't maintained by oil pressure.

PS Its no different for HVs. Mobil was the only company to produce 0w16 for a good while. Mostly because Toyota oil is produced by Mobil.

It's all for getting every little bit of mileage out of a vehicle that the auto manufacturers can possibly get.
l wonder at what point engine longevity will start to suffer.

No one will convince me that any of these ultralight oils are good for an engine. The film thickness of the oil is actually part of the engineered bearing tolerances. If they spec that light an oil, it assumes a bearing tolerance of near zero. That means zero cushion, and enormous shearing forces on the oil. What happens when that oil breaks down a bit?

Think about it this way. Your 30wt you’re running now easily shears down to a 20wt in an OCI, so you’ve been running 20wt or less at some point.

People over complicate oil for little/no reason. Keep it full with what the manual specifies and change it based on your usage criteria. This crazy equation has worked years for me and allowed me to log over half a million miles in multiple Toyotas with zero engine issues. Close to 150k of those running the cheapest 0w-20 oil Supertech from Walmart. Amazing!

I have no doubt that 0w-16 will work just fine, considering it’s been used credibly overseas for awhile now.

I'm waiting for 0W0 oil and wonder what it will look like on paper when we go left of the bar once at 0.

All those minus signs! Oh the horror!

0-16 is for the new Toyota FWD 4 cylinders, its purely for emissions. I would never ever run it in any other vehicle. 0w20 is as thin as I would go. (I am running 0w20 this winter on my V6)

But we should always listen to what the manual says because it knows best right?

They already do with engines running 0-20. I have never seen more vehicles (of various makes and models mind you, not just one make) spinning bearings and blowing head gaskets before than since the adoption of 0-20 oil in engines across nearly all manufacturers.

Finally, some people with some sense on this forum!

I'm sticking with my 10w30!!!!!!! With 5,000 mile OCI.
I'll gladly give up that miniscule improvement in mileage!!!!

Well there is the fact that blackstone consistently has raw data that continues to prove otherwise. Not an oil expert myself, but also not oblivious to what information is already out there. if the argument is solely for mpg increase, than simply drive more conservatively. That however doesn’t discount that the “thinner and weaker” oils aren’t substantial for engines today.

The main drive for thinner and thinner oil is mpg unde CAFE. Every little bit helps. A 0.3 or 0.4 mpg improvement over the whole volume of sales can save a company from a major hit in penalties. Or allow them to accumulate more credits that they can apply later if they don't meet the CAFE targets.
I believe that oil technology has improved immensely over the years. l just hope that the engines themselves can stand the test of time with the thinner and thinner oils, that are being used in engines that are working harder and harder.
All that makes me apprehensive about the whole thing.
Though l do hope my apprehension is all for nothing.

I completely understand the reasoning for shifting to it fleet-wide, but for the individual owner, driving conservatively is going to do way more than any motor oil, especially if it’s not even specced to use it. I’ve personally used it for at least 150k in 2 Toyota’s with zero issues. That’s only my account, however Toyota has millions upon millions of vehicles on the road using these thinner oils with barely any longevity issues. A good example I can think of are the Prius taxis that start and stop hours a day with +400k on the odometer. They’ve been using 0w-20 for years with no issue. I know a guy who has nearly 400k between 2 2016 Tacomas, and he hauls and tows on a daily basis. He also used Supertech 0w-20, the cheapest on the market. If these thinner oils were truly bad, we’d know by now. You’d see engines burning out and being rebuilt much sooner, when in fact it’s been the opposite. I have yet to see any trend data showing premature failure or unsubstantial protection in 0w-20/16 oils in naturally aspirated engines driven under normal conditions. That goes for other manufacturers and not just Toyota. I can understand speculation to a degree, but there has to come a certain point where raw data, analytics, and testimony override it.

Back when 10W30 was standard people complain about 5W30. Same for 5W20 and 0W20. 0W16 is no different. Unless an engine is back speced don’t run it.
