I think because most people believe thicker oil offers a better protection barrier between moving parts.

The same reason members think 35" tires are superior to anything else.

Actually, on 10k OCI and extended drains, even synthetic oils can shear down to lighter weights, some of them quite a bit, ie Mobil 1 which most likely makes TGMOil. This has been shown with used oil analysis at BITOG. If you start with a 30wt and is shears to a 20wt, it's still within spec. If you start with a 20wt and it shears to a 10wt, not so good. I'm not saying this is happening, but these are real world stats. Used oil doesn't stay within it's OEM spec especially at 10k miles. Another issue is TBN and when it goes to 0, your oil is basically water, but that is effected in all weights.

    I moved to 00-W10.
I know better. My MPG is 40 now going uphill and towing a trailer.

I'm going to start posting this in every oil thread.

This was using Wally World's SuperTech full synthetic for $15 for a 5qt jug. You can pay more for something else, but why? You can question the manufactures recommendation, but why?

FYI total miles on the truck at the report was 42k.

Here is some data from Amsoil's page, mobil 1 etc.. are similar. Thicker viscosities due perform better in heat shear, noack
    etc...

You probably need to read that again. Oil, even synthetic, changes viscosity at temperature. Synthetic is extremely stable though, compared to dino oil. It's viscosity over temperature is very flat, which means it does not change much due to temperature. What they are talking about is oil, at a specific temp, over a specific time, being a different viscosity because of a chemistry change. This is not gonna happen with 0W over 10K miles under normal operation. Ever. Now, taking it to redline, using a straight 40 weight and keeping it there for 500 hours is gonna change the oil.

In your example above you say 30 could shear to 20. Except, if you start with a 20, the whole thing changes because the operating temp viscosity is different to begin with.

Bottom line, yes, it could happen under super special conditions. But, I could get struck by lightning.....now! Darn, didn't happen.

Here is the question that NOBODY asked!
    - do you own the truck (in full)
    - do you own the truck (payments)
    - do you own the truck (either way) but looking to trade it in the future?
    - do you lease the truck
If 1-2 buy and use the best oil,
If 3-4 I would not even change the oil. Fuck it.
I am looking to keep my truck for a looooong way (paid in full) and I will stick with 5W-30 Amsoil SS. All those "superior" oils are ONLY to kiss the EPA/CAFE ass in order to sell the trucks in US. Same engines outside US use recommended 5W-30. Do your own search and learn.
I am stunned at members screaming to use 0W-20 or you're an idiot but have no problems, cutting, chopping, trimming. welding, drilling, adding, removing things to/from the taco. How about the Toyota engineers not thinking about it...were they stupid or do TW members know better???

There is none. People are just convinced because that's what they've always used. It's dumb.

0w-20 ain’t nothing. The new Toyota 4 cylinders use 0w-16.

0w-20 has been fine in Toyota v6s for getting close to a decade. Just run it and you’ll have no issues

My 91 S10 got 25-30 mpg's all day every day. Single cab 4cyl 5 speed manual No AC, no power steering, no air bags, literally bare bones, and probably not safe in a crash......those trucks can't be made anymore, even with the desirable mpg's....why?

    Rhetorical question....

0W20 is superior to all other oils. No oil, ever invented, has ever been better than 0W20. Even the guys over at WD40 have admitted 0W20 is better. They used it on the Space Shuttle, and ‘owned the podium’ at the Indy 500 using it as fuel for chrissakes. My wife gave birth to our daughter in a tub of 0W20 and the kid’s a genius.

It might be different specs for each country even if the engine is mechanically the same.... they might not be though.... Maybe same engine with slightly different specs.... Anyway, the reason for different specs in the oil could as well be cost.

IE, US is requiring better MPG numbers. Other countries don't and the 5W-30 is cheaper in those countries. $0.02 a quart would be big numbers for Toyota.

All that being said, it still doesn't mean that 0W-20 is inferior oil.

Using the same logic applied here in this thread, I have found that:

0W-20 is made by US Veterans and the profits are used to feed orphans.

5W-30 is made by foreign terrorists who funnel the profits into feline exploitation.

    YOU DECIDE!
