Currently in the process of buying a new 2020 Tacoma, and came across this offer online. 0% APR sounds great, but +$1000 sounds even better. I just can't find anywhere that explains what a special edition (TB Package) means. Is it some regional package that is added?

after looking deeper into this, this picture really looks odd. the "TB" option is unique to GST but the offer looks like from the SET region. something funky is going on with that picture offer. SET only offers financing thru SET financial while GST goes thru toyota financial.

looking at the offer doesn't match the pdf of the offer from GST of 72 months @ 0% and missing the 1750 customer cash.

If it's a Gulf States specific thing, maybe the "Special Edition" is the TSS package?

Found this about the 2019 Tundra TSS:

    https://www.chron.com/cars/article/Toyota-Tundra-2019-lineup-addresses-off-road-13892742.php

Toyota furthers the ability for consumers to choose the degree of off-road appearance and capability with other special packages that vary with regions. For instance, truckers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas are offered the Truck Sport Series Off-Road Special Edition Package.

This TSS Off-Road package is a $4,995 option that pumps up SR and SR5 appearances with a Black (SR’s only choice) or Graphite theme. It’s offered with either the 4.6- or 5.7-liter V-8 and in 4x2 or 4x4 configurations.

The TSS Black package combines an aggressive off-road attitude and street styling. It upgrades factory wheels and tires with 20-inch milled matte-black wheels and all-terrain tires. The theme continues with 5-inch black oval tube steps, black exhaust tip and matte-black badge overlays.

The TSS Graphite package gives the exterior a visual pop with 20-inch milled gloss-graphite wheels with all-terrain tires, chrome oval tube steps and stainless-steel exhaust tip. Both packages include TSS Off-Road bed-side decals and all-weather floor mats.
    =====================

edit: yeah, I think that's it. Found this one offered at a dealership with the "TB package", and in the pics it shows a TSS model:

    https://www.toyotaofparistx.com/inv...-tb-package-rwd-4d-crewmax-5tfey5f11lx259359/

And it makes sense if you get a $5k (on Tundra) appearance package, Toyota will give you a $1k rebate.

Do you have 16" or 17" wheels?

Looks like this deal has 16" wheels so I'm just curious now since the TSS has 17" wheels.

I'm wondering what else is different?

The new deal is running for a "TB package", so I'm guessing its the same thing. This time its $199/24 Months/1149 due at signing which is pretty much the same as the $175/24/2000 that was running last month.

Dealers just tack on more to the final price or make their money somewhere else in the deal. All they're doing is making the buyer feel like they are coming out on top. Similar to when someone gets approved for a loan at the dealer and they "talk to the banks" and get you a 3% interest rate for example. In reality the banks could have given you a 2% rate but the dealer tacked on a little more to take a little off the top.

^^Dealerships dont make the interest regardless if what it's set at.....any of it......and certainly dont increase it to skim off the top

Their profit comes from sale price and (guessing) kickbacks from Toyota Corporate

Mmmmm, they definitely do. There are even state laws that regulate how much they can markup the interest rate.

What dealership provides their own financing? The state laws regulate lenders, which dealerships are not.

No dealership I've ever purchased from (dozens) cared about who/what lender I used, and the deal was never contingent on financing rates.

I didn't say a dealership provides their own financing. When they are the middle men to your financing they are able to tack on additional interest and make money off it. Simply google "dealer reserve financing" and you can find info on how it works. If you use your own lender then great. That's whats recommended when buying a car so the dealer can't scam more money from you.

Wow. You're right, thanks for teaching me something new, @toweltrick

Sorry to sidetrack the thread, but I can't figure out how a dealer finance dept could pull this off regularly and stay in business. How many people dont shop interest rates with such a big loan?

How does the dealer get their money? Payments aren't going to them so the real lender must reimburse, and do so up front, yes?

    Thanks again for the lesson!

Yeah, I feel like I've detracted a lot from the original purpose of this post so this will be my last response. But hopefully this has also given OP more knowledge to help in his buying process.

No problem though. A lot of people don't know about it. I've purchased about 10 cars through dealers and I didn't know about it for a while. They pull it off because the buyer never sees it. This part of the process is done quietly between bank and dealer working together to both line their pockets a little more. I'm sure they take into account whatever state laws regulate them and have deals with banks they work with so both can maximize profits. But the buyer will only see the final interest rate they were given, pays the bank for the loan and I'm assuming banks have an automatic system to give the dealer their slice.

I honestly figured out about it only because a friend of mine got hired at a dealership as a salesman and he filled me in on a couple tricks. The rest is just me assuming how it works in the background.

This isn't necessarily the case. The Dealers need to move new vehicles in order to stay in good standing with the factory, so you can get a pretty good deal on a NEW vehicle if you shop around multiple dealers/states/regions. If a dealer needs to move stock at the end of the quarter they will make better deals.

Generally speaking they make dramatically more money re-selling your used trade in that they low balled you on than they do selling a new vehicle. They absolutely make money on the financing, just like your mortgage broker, but they get their money from the lender right when they close the deal then they are done with your financing.
