Howdy again, it's been a while since I last posted on here. I've done some more upgrades and fixes since my original thread and one of those upgrades was swapping in a nicer gauge cluster from a '99-'00 SR5 with a tachometer. Everything works fine but here's a major issue: the miles on the new digital odometer are HALF of the truck's original miles!

Is there a way to artificially roll the miles UP on this digital odometer? I'm not an electrical engineer nor an electrician, but I believe the odometer works off of a current or signal sent from the speed sensor in the transmission. My only idea (besides spinning the speed sensor with a drill for DAYS to make the 125k difference) is to artificially replicate that signal, connect it to the cluster or speed sensor wire, and trick the cluster into thinking the truck is doing 250,000 mph for 30 minutes.

Why do I want to roll the miles forward? Mainly this is an integrity/legal issue, I don't want to get myself in trouble the next time the mileage is reported being half of what it last was. Also, if I had to sell this truck, I want the buyer to know the miles are accurate and not fraud. My second reason is that I'm proud of this truck's miles as not many vehicles will achieve that on the original engine, transmission, body and etc. Granted, Toyotas have a good reputation of living long when cared for!

The original gauge cluster at 253,996 mies:

The new cluster at 126,826 miles:

It's very nice and I think the tach-equipped cluster looks a lot more upscale than the base gauge cluster! I didn't realize how cheap-looking the needles were and it how dated the 80s grid pattern was on the aux gauges. That said, I'm working with mechanicjon to correct my new odometer since I want to retain the correct mileage!

At least in CA, there is a simply checkbox on DMV forms that says "indicated mileage is ACTUAL mileage".

When I sold my 86 4Runner, I had run 32's on it for the last ~100k miles with stock gears, so that mileage was way off too. It indicated ~320k. I could have done the math, but all I needed to do was check that box, lol.

With my last truck, when I traded it in for my '04, I disclosed that I had changed the dash cluster and that the mileage was NOT correct. I had the correction factor if they cared (they didn't, lol). I got a call from a DMV investigator a while later asking why the mileage on the truck I traded in was lower than when I bought it (used, at the same dealer). I explained what happened, and it turns out the dealer didn't check that box even though I had paperwork that showed I disclosed that to the dealer.

If you are doing this simply for your own benefit, I would proceed with mechanicjon's recommendation to reprogram it, but if you are doing this to be in technical compliance with the law, I would look into that in more detail before getting it reprogrammed. I can imagine needing to do that kind of thing at a DMV office or at some state certified mechanic, if it's even "legal" at all. As with CA, they just tell you to check that box and move on.
