007 Taco Pro Rear Bearing Replacement Question

Friends I have a 2007 Tacoma 4x4 V6

This is my passengers side axel picture from a few years ago when i did the seal.

Got a noise coming from the diff and with 436000km id say the wheel bearings are toast

 

Wait, what's the question?

 

In my research I see ABS have a big tone ring that needs to be pressed off

My 2007 has ABS but no tone ring it is inside the bearing ......

 

Is that toothed piece not the tone ring though?
I'm probably wrong on that, but just a thought.

 

I think the toothed part is the tone ring as the wheel speed sensor is next to it.

But in the how to research I have done I have not seen this set up

 

Ah okay.
I hope someone with experience on this is able to chip in.

That wheel bearing is burnt toast. The tone ring you see there is actually covered by plastic on a new bearing.

Edit: if you pull the axle out and bring it to a shop, remove the locking ring before you drop it off and give them the new one to reinstall.

 

Ah so my truck ate this plastic ring also hummmmmm

 

Oh damn, that doesn't sound good.

 

It also LOOKS like the seal in your axle tube was leaking and letting gear oil get to the back of the bearing unit as well. Another thing that LOOKS to be missing from your pics is the large o-ring that goes around the axle tube where the seal goes (unless you took it off prior to taking the pic).

 

Guess which one is bad...



That caused a droning sound that resonated through the whole cabin. I'm sooooooo happy to have had finally found it.
