I have a 2001 Tacoma with a 2.4L automatic transmission (A43D) that was rebuilt at 211K and now has just over 300k on it. Changed the fluid recently and it does not shift correctly, may require high revs to finally shift, so I now shift manually from 1 through 3. Can anyone advise what I need to be looking at or checking out to finally solve so I can just put it in drive and let it shift on it's own? Thank you.

You have a computer controlled transmission . Next step woule be making sure the fluid is full and then scan for codes

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I thought these only came with manual transmissions and the 2.7 had the option of both?

Your shift points are mechanically controlled by a TV cable or Kickdown cable. Its a cable that goes from your throttle plate to your transmission. My truck wouldn't shift out of first gear the other day. The cable was stuck wide open. Check to see if the cable moves freely.

OP it could be a number things, shift solenoid could be out, or the pressure solenoid could be out. I had this same problem with the transmission in my Monte Carlo and it was both of them gone out. Your torque converter may be locking up and not releasing at the right time also.

no, they always had autos but the factory puts out like 40% auto and 60% manuals so you see a lot more manuals then autos

As bhale001 stated I believe the kick down cable is seized in the wide open throttle position on the 98 I am working on. This truck is my daughters friends truck, her starter was out, old brittle tires replaced, were not safe, she had spare on and tire in bed was mostly fibers hanging from rim! Wasnt shifting to 2nd gear till 35mph, 3rd at 70mph! Messed around with kickdown cable and know she wont shift out of 1st gear at all. I noticed the cable had a lot of slack in it. When I rotate the throttle to full stop the kickdown cabel is still loose. I pulled and pushed on it and know NO SHIFT AT ALL! At the transmission cable is above Park safety switch? On far end of shifter rod shaft. Behind exhaust and Cat, hard to access. Took screw out of Park switch but just rotates, adjustment screw i think? How do I remove cable from tranny??? Looks like maybe there is a big nut at end of shifter shaft that if removed would allow park switch to come off? Maybe then I could see cable end at tranny? No manual please help, already spent too much on someones elses vehicle, know it wont shift.
