So I saw a YouTube video with a guy with a 91 pickup I believe it was, and he had a surging idle, he said he cleaned out some sort of coolant hose going to the throttle body. I'm not sure but I believe the throttle position sensor for an automatic is different than a manual, and if that's the case I have to swap those out. I might actually just swap the whole throttle body from the old motor just to save me the trouble of figuring out what's going on.

You should try starting with lowering the idle, but if you have an intermittent issue with idle rising and falling, I'd look into cleaning your MAF sensor and your idle air control. MAF is pretty simple to clean, get some maf cleaner, and just remove the sensor from its housing next to the air cleaner. IAC can be a bitch to get to and usually involves removing the whole throttle body. Clean the throttle body out while you're in there and make sure not to strip the four screws holding the iac to the tb, it's pretty easy to do so. You can either get a new iac or clean it, but put a new gasket in either way. There are a couple good YouTube videos on the process, one involving a Tacoma, I believe. Do you have an FSM?

service manual? no i don't have one, Ill clean up the throttle body tomorrow like you said, it hasn't been revving up and down as much now, but the idle is still real high. so ill lower the idle, and probably just take out the throttle body and clean everything, its not too difficult to take out really. thanks dev

It's not tough to find one for the year your looking for (2001?) but u can find one for your engine. If you google "3rz-fe fsm" u should come up with one from 1996. Most of the info is correct, but there are some outliers that you usually need should keep an eye out for.

Oops, posted that reply too soon. IT IS hard to find one for your year. Having an FSM is the difference maker in bigger jobs: step by step instructions, pictures to guide you, and factory specs. Get one. Hope it all work out for you, I replaced a 2.7 recently, they can be pretty temperamental, good luck.

Just a quick update since I never said anything, I cleaned up the old throttle body, cleaned the gunk off the plate and where the plate meets the body, and tried to clean all the openings. I put this one in and the idle was actually too low, and by too low I mean almost stalling.. It seemed to have fixed itself and is now idling around 800-1000 so I'm happy, everything is running smoothly aside from the rattling of a loose heat shield (which is getting on my nerves). Thanks for all the help
