I got my Tacoma used from a private owner. The guy didn't say it had an alarm - I test drove the car, thought all was well and bought it. Had it for months and all is good. However one time I took the positive lead off the battery and after putting it back on an alarm started going off!

Took me a minute but I found there was a momentary switch on the driver side panel - below the dash. Holding this disabled the alarm - and the corresponding led that is installed in the dash.

Did all Tacoma's come stock with an alarm and he just lost his remote and neglected to tell me? Or did he have a cheap alarm system installed where it only works when you disconnect the + battery lead?

The LED in the dash looks...I don't know what stock or modded looks like.

Anyway to test, find out if its stock from the dealer? If so, is it pricey to get a replacement remote? I called an alarm place and they were telling me that it would be cheaper to just have a new system installed (they estimated $130-50) than try and get a replacement remote from the dealer, they claimed it would be super pricey. I took that with a grain of salt of course cause they could just be trying to sell me an alarm + install.

    Thanks.

Oh, the truck is manual windows and locks btw

Follow the wire from the switch you pressed to disable the alarm (valet switch) to the brain of the alarm. You might need to remove some interior panels. Once you find the brain, it should have the make and model of the alarm.

I have a 2001 dbl.cab trd off road and it sounds like its a factory installed alarm that you have. My keyless cracked after some years and quit working so i got a replacement from ikeyless.com for about 35 bucks. Easy to switch and program.
