I have a 01 Tacoma Prerunner v6. I've checked the threads and have found the answer to my driver's side lock, which has been fixed. Now with my passenger lock, I have a different problem. My key goes in the lock. It turns. But it doesn't unlock. You know how if you're unlocking your driver's side door. And if you double turn the key to unlock, it unlocks the passenger. Well, the passenger door makes that sound when you turn the key but it doesn't unlock. I have already cleaned and lubed the lock but it hasn't helped my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Have you applied the proper amount of vibration therapy?

So I just noticed something. From the driver's side. I can unlock the door with the key but can not lock it with the key. Vice versa on the passenger side. On the passenger, I can't unlock it but if its already unlocked. I can lock it with the key. Its as if something is backward on the passenger door. I don't know. Confused AF.

Gonna have to take the panels apart and look at the actual mechanism. Even though it is an electric system it still has moving parts that can come unclipped from each other, which does happen sometimes.

plastic clips get brittle with age.

also if your attempting to open the door with a slim jim things tend to break as well if your out of practice

there's an anti theft sleeve that shields the door lock lever. I've had that get messed up and it physically prevents the lock from going down. basically you need to pop off the door panel and examine/ lube the linkages. its also possible the lock mechanism is starting to go. i had to prepare replace my driver side lock. its expensive too because it's integral to the latch. i got a doorman which seems well made but had a wiring problem that reversed the up and down movements. basically when i pushed the door lock switch it unlocked instead, and vice a versa. i ended up comparing the wires with the ones on my old lock and switched the position of two wires in the harness connector which fixed it. hopefully they solved that problem since then.

This is what I'm talking about. I examined everything and all moving parts are connected and working. Its the electrical part I believe is the problem. I've never had anyone working on the door since I've had it but that doesn't mean the previous owner didn't. So I noticed the carousel only goes one way. meaning turn one way to unlock, the other to lock whereas newer ones can rotate both ways from a set position. One to unlock the other to unlock all or whatever. Now on mine. Driver side turns left and you hear the electronic mechanism unlocking like it's supposed to. Now when I turn it back to the right to "lock". It doesn't lock. Nothing happens. I just noticed I'm always locking it from the inside. No biggie. On the passenger it's backward. When I turn the lock to the right (since it's passenger, everything is opposite) which should unlock it. Nothing happens. No electrical locking mechanism sounds. Nothing. When I turn it back to the left, which should be locking it if it were'nt already locked. You hear the electrical locking sound. Let us say the door is unlocked. When I turn to the left from the right position, IT LOCKS and you hear the locking mechanism sound. So it's completely backward from the driver.
Is this the way everyone lock works on this model. where if you turn one way and it unlocks but doesn't lock when you turn the other way.
I'm now wondering if the wiring is backward on the passenger. I don't mind locking from the inside but I def would like to be able to unlock from the passenger side while locked from the outside. Hope it wasn't too confusing.

All electric locks should unlock with just the key on the door your using .

If all the linkage is connected .

Otherwise every dead battery with electric locks would need to have a lock smith called since most other vendors will now decline to attempt to enter the vehicle .

How many will just bust out the window to get the vehicle started

i understand your problem now. and i suspect it might be the door lock cylinder. as mine got worn down and used more they didn't turn as far and turned better in one direction than the other. that's just from the components wearing down and gunking up. obviously you've had the door panel off. i suggest disconnecting the linkage from the door cylinder and playing with it by hand. does it still lock and unlock if you pull up or push down on the linkage?
