I bought an 01 Tacoma 2.7L 4spd auto SR5 Xtracab, overall the body is very clean, no rust at all, engine and transmission run like new. Only real dents are in front and rear bumpers, as well as the tailgate. Interior is in near mint condition(might be exaggerating a little) as well, but overall I love it. Ive owned it for almost three months now(and put 3,500 miles on it! no problems yet!), and want to start modding it a bit more. But first, I know the smart thing is to verify that everything is actually in good, working condition. So, my first question is what general upkeep should I do? I will be replacing the fan belt, as well as doing an oil change soon. Belt has begun to squeak, and the oil is about 4,000 miles old. As far as transmission fluid, Is it worth changing? I’m not sure how old it is, and honestly would not be surprised if it is as old as the truck. Transmission fluid, as far as I can tell, is often overlooked by non car people, especially when companies now claim “lifetime fluid”.

In the next year or so, I hope to swap the front seats to something a bit more comfortable. Mine has a weird Bench/bucket seat combo, The passenger seat is separate from the drivers, however the arm rest/center console can flip up to form a third teeny tiny seat. I’m really looking for something like power operated, heated and ventilated. For something as important as seats, I don’t mind forking out more money for them, as I use it alot. Any recs?

I also want to add a sunroof, should I try to find a totaled tacoma with a “factory” dealership add on sunroof, go aftermarket, or find a full length aftermarket rag top sunroof? or is it even worth adding one? I very much enjoy driving around with the wind in my hair, and if the tacoma was offered as a convertible i would definitely buy one as stupid as that sounds. Think convertible offroaders like a suzuki samurai.

I do plan on replacing the headliner and carpet, changing both to black, as I hope to eventually make it into a more modern “luxury” truck. I understand this is an ambitious goal if I hope to do it right, but honestly i tend to be overconfident and underprepared, so it’s not uncommon for that to be the case. I do have a bit of experience with swapping carpets and headliners, and I am able to do both just fine, however when it comes to the more mechanical side of things I am definitely inexperienced.

I also want to relocate the factory radio, and move it to where the vents are currently. I read through an older thread on here that was a very detailed diy attempt at relocating it, however they just swapped the climate controls down to where the radio was. I figure if I’m gonna do it I should go big, and rearrange the entire dash while i’m at it.

A factory-looking Sub setup? I’ve looked around the interior for a spot to potentially put a subwoofer in a discreet location, and the best spot I can find is in the storage pocket underneath the rear passenger fold up seat. Has anyone tried this spot before? I think I might be able to fit a 10 inch into a custom cover, but im not certain. I’d prefer that I can still use the seat when im hauling around friends or luggage. Right now I just have a small 10inch kicker sub behind the drivers seat, and it has plenty enough bass for me. I don’t need a ton, but I would like to be able to crank it up to more than necessary.

I also plan on adding a front and back camera, and possibly parking sensors

Supercharger for the 2.7L? I haven’t done a ton of research into the topic, but I’m curious if there isa supercharger that would work on the 2.7L, as the engine isn’t quite as powerful as I would like it to be. It is plenty powerful for daily driving, but a little more pick-up would be nice for merging, as it is definitely not quick. Although, would it be worth swapping a 3.4 with a supercharger into the truck instead? I don’t plan on engine swapping any time soon, probably not until this one blows up or I have enough money to mess around with that type of thing. Ive also considered manual swapping it, however that will be further down the line.
As strange as it sounds given everything Ive listed, I hope to keep the truck looking relatively stock. By this I mean fully changing the interior/exterior styling to look like it was intended to be built that way, I don’t necessarily want it to stay looking like a 20 year old truck. My end goal is to have a modernized take on a first gen, as newer tacomas are larger than my liking, and to my knowledge there arent any new trucks that are first gen sized, nor do I have the money to afford buying a new truck given the market and the fact that I am a high schooler, about to graduate.

As for mods that I have done so far, I mentioned above that I have a kicker amp and sub that I am borrowing from my brother while he is away at college,(I could be wrong here) it is the Kicker Comp C 300w rms 10” amp with the slimish box, and i believe a kicker 400.1 amp. I could definitely be wrong, Ill check in the morning. I also have swapped in some kicker speakers for the doors, I can’t remember the model right now, but they are 75w rms. I have also installed a Pioneer DMH-W4660 NEX head unit, which has been great. I actually have installed it twice, the first one started reboot looping after not auto-connecting, so i returned it with no hassle at best buy.

I appreciate any tips, tricks, or support, and here are a couple of pics of the truck! Its a beaut for sure. If anyone is interested in pictures of the new door speakers, my amp/sub install, or the new head unit let me know! I’m glad a community like this exists, even though I am under the assumption that modding a first gen to be more luxurious isn’t the common path to take!2BE8BC43-1639-49DF-884D-15A29751AD0C.jpg95F7E392-57C3-41AB-8354-03CC8D320464.jpg 0D7A87B2-E741-44DD-9226-C1CFE97996FE.jpg

If the 40/60 seats are grey and you're close to Virginia I'd be happy to add cigarette burns to the upholstery for a modest fee.

Haha they are grey and I coincidentally am located in VA, east of Richmond area. Thanks for the offer, but I’m going to politely decline, if you could put some miscellaneous stains in the carpet that would be appreciated

Definitely do all the fluids. I’d do that on any new to me vehicle. Run some sea foam and do the air filter, spark plugs, clean the MAF and run it good!!

Ill go through them all soon, however I have heard that if you change the transmission fluid when it has never been changed(or hasn’t been changed in over 40kish miles) that it can cause slipping, because it doesnt have the grip it needs from the floating sediment of sorts. Thats my concern with changing it, however, it only has 94,000 miles on it as of now, so it might still be able to shift smoothly on some new fluids. Ive got concerns on both sides of the table. Also, what does sea foam do? one of my buddies mentioned it to me today and I was kinda lost.
