The 03 transmission will not work for OP. He has an 02 which the transmission has the good ol' throttle cable (aka kickdown cable). In 2003 Toyota introduced ETCS-i and removed the throttle cable.

More info on ETCS-i can be found here - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/toyota-etcs-i-electronic-throttle-on-2003-2004-trucks.524499/

@Mysman would need a transmission from 2002 or before. He can also look at A340E transmissions out of 4Runners as well (for 4Runner I believe it would be 2000 and before). Just make sure it has the throttle cable and is from the same engine. The only difference I ran into is the Park/Neutral Safety Switch would need to be swapped (simple swap, 1 bolt). The connector is slightly different on the 4Runner.

This is a picture of an A340F out of a 1999 4Runner (6cyl). It's the transmission I used when I swapped out my A340E to convert the Taco to 4WD. Pictured is the throttle position cable.

The A340E tail will look different than the A340F as it lacks the adapter for the transfer case. A340E pictured below, 4cyl (pic stolen from @BartMaster1234) - note the throttle cable is also visible.

@Mysman, your best bet is to use www.car-part.com and search your area for an A340E if you decide to replace the transmission completely. It absolutely needs to be the from the same engine as yours since the starter location is different between the 4 and 6cyl. Pictured below (pic stolen from @dunc_werks) is an example of this (6 cyl on left, 4cyl on right).

Spot on, great info. The only post I will need if/when I ever have to source a transmission for my truck.

Thanks for the great info, not very familiar with the changes that occurred on later first gens, didn’t know they ditched the line pressure cable in 03 ….great info.
