I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
its your front sensor, its sort of a pain to get to but its do=able.
plenty of good instructions on here to do it.
one word of wisdom, go ahead and replace both. front and rear. rear is very easy.
it will make your truck run better and get better mpg
order them from rockauto, best price by far. and u get a 5%disc.
get a can of power blaster and spray the nuts before you drive it for a few days, they get rusty and stuck, and this will make them spin off.
i did both in a hour taking my time.
just unhook neg battery cable. replace sensors hook cable, and crank.
    [IMG]mmine when i changed them...

There's no indication it's the front.

The "bank" indicates which side of the motor it's on.

There are only 2. Number one is in front of the cat. Rockauto has the best price by far for these.

Change out my front O2 sensor last week. It was pretty easy. Check engine light is now off. I got my DENSO 02 sensor from AMAZON for about $103.00.

When I look up the Denso it's coming up around 40 bucks? How do I know its the right one though it doesn't ask for motor type on Amazon or are they all the same?

I'm 90% sure that 2002 (V6, 3.4L) and later all use Denso part # 234-9001, which is an air fuel ratio sensor, which is also more expensive, which is what the posters above are talking about.

I think for 2001, depending on if your car is Cali-spec for emissions or not, you may need a different one, which is significantly cheaper, which is probably what came up for you on Amazon. Double check your truck for which emissions package you have.

2001 and 02 auto trans 3.4 take the 9001. 2000 and previous are the years that had the 500 different sensors available for the O2/AFR for Cali and Federal emissions vehicles.

I saw what type of Tacoma you own on your profile and looked it up on Amazon parts finder and this is what I found. Hope this helps.

That makes more sense now! So if I want to replace the O2 sensor as well as the air fuel sensor then the O2 one I saw must of been the cheaper one. Thanks,

All first gen Tacoma's (96-04) have only 2 o2 sensors. And they sorrta work together to keep your truck running smooth and good.
Front one is basically your AFR sensor (Air Fuel Ratio) and if that sensor goes bad it can cause your truck to run rich and you can loose MPG and sometimes run rough. I had all these symptoms on my 02 Taco.
And these symptoms cause my rear o2 sensor to go bad... So its always best to just replace them both at the same time.
And the rear o2 just moniters the cats.

    GL :)

Mine threw the P0420 code, print out from AutoZone says

    Definition
    1) Catalyst system efficiency below threshold - bank 1 Probable cause
    2) Air leak in exhaust before rear H02S (Heated Oxygen sensor) Bank 1
    3) AF sensor error
    4) Fuel system fault
    5) Faulty catalytic converter

I figure I'll just start with the AF and 02 sensor and then go from there if i'm still having an issue. My truck has almost 160,000 miles so it won't hurt to do a little preventive maintenance even if that isn't my problem. Next thing i'll prob check is for any exhaust leaks, last thing would be the catalytic converer.

You're welcome.. Sorry, to confuse you on my first post. I saw I typed O2 sensor instead of Air/Fuel sensor for the front. So, if you get a error Code I believe it was P1135 that will be for the Air Fuel sensor.

Even though it is called an "air fuel sensor", it is still an oxygen sensor. They both do the same job: Measuring oxygen content in the exhaust stream for engine management. Just a little FYI.
