Does the 4x4 green light come on and stay solid on the dash when you put it in 4wd?

Might be an issue with the actuator, I know they are known to act up on these older trucks with ADD 4wd (not manual hubs).

Do you hear a manual click sound when you put it in 4x4? if you do not have manual hubs, you have an ADD (automatic disconnecting differential) which is a small motor that engages and disengages a collar to disconnect one front CV axle between the diff and the hub.
I had that motor go out on my tacoma one time, and since the diff was open, neither tire spun. (The disconnected side is spinning inside the diff and has less resistance than the always connected side so it gets all the power, neither side spins)

I've been doing some research guys and I've seen where some people are soldering the electrical connection on the actuator is this something I can look into or is this a bad way to fix it

When my motor broke I could not hear that small click, so I was assuming that's what the sound was. You could put it in 4x4, jack up the front, and try to spin one tire by hand to see if the other spins. That will tell you if your ADD is working

You see... THIS thread right here is why I'll take my "weaker" CVs that come with my Manual locking hubs

I grabbed a new motor from the junk yard. Never had any more issues. Some people just lock the collar in place so it is engaged all the time, in theory that will lower your MPG a little
