I'm working on an 02 Tacoma that won't move unless 4wd is engaged. Anybody have a clue where I start looking at why. This is a new one on me.

What kind of transfer case? Is it really in 4wd? Kinda sounds like whatever is selecting the gears is out of position.

Just a factory stock case. Definitely in 4wd. The truck is at the shop but what just hit me is it's probably driving off the front wheels and the rear end let go. Just a guess...Almost hoping I'm wrong.

... o_O Did you feel the rear end blow up?

There was just another member who experienced something similar. The forum regulars got to play this same guessing game, and then he casually mentioned something exploding in the rear end as if it didn't play into the equation.

This is a customers/friends truck and he didn't mention it. He tells me about every creak and squeak so he would have said something. 120k and it's just used around town so no hard life. I prefer to play this game without the surprises.

I'd just get it up on a lift or jackstands and see what ya got. If the xfer case has the electric actuator it might just be stuck in N or something easy. Otherwise rear end destruction is a possibility, but you'd probably hear it :notsure:

We love carnage pictures.. Just saying.

Yes it's definitely in. I didn't get a chance to dig far today. It was late, it will go on the lift early afternoon tomorrow.
