    Pictures?

There shouldn't be a button for 4WD on the 1st gen Tacoma, it should be a J shift transfer case.

    Welcome to TacomaWorld
If 4Lo is engaging and disengaging properly the front differential Add actuator is working, this points to the Tcase 4hi actuator being suspect. Check and clean electrical connectors.
If the Tcase actuator vent hose isn't connected moisture and dirt get in and corrode the contacts, servo motor and gears. If the hose is off remove the actuator for interior service or replacement, your choice. But first use a multimeter to check the 4Hi switch.
    Good luck.

The 4Hi button works best when used while moving, not sitting still.

    Huh. o_O

Never seen one of those in a Tacoma before, only in The 01'-02' Limited 4Runners.

Bizarre didn't even know that was an option gor the 1st gen Tacoma.

Did 4WD originally work on this truck or are you a new owner?

Push button 4hi is more common in the 2001-2004 than J shift. Only J shift 01+ I've seen have been a few on this forum
