Sold my 03 Tacoma today to a very nice gentleman. Believe we both got a fair deal.

When he got back home he gave me a call to tell me how much he liked the truck and that he was satisfied. Then he told me he thought the syncro in 4th gear done, which caught me off guard.

When I bought the truck a year and half ago, I struggled not to grind going into 4th gear but chalked it up to a tight clutch. Since my purchase I have never had an issue of grinding going into 4th gear just making sure I clutched all the way. It was my daily driver and I never thought anything of it as I was accustomed to clutching all the way and the gear not grinding. The guy drove it today with no issues. On his way home he said began to notice the issue when he was driving a bit more aggressive and juicing it.

I feel badly and will help him out any way I can. Any ideas on what may be wrong and what I should expect? Thanks.

I have noticed 4th can be funny sometimes as it is iirc a 1 to 1 ratio. If I don't clutch completely or if my transmission is extremely cold I find it a bit difficult to shift. Maybe suggest changing the gear oil to Redline MT 90. Seems to be the consensus here.

Didn't you sell it "as is, no warrantees expressed or implied?"

You shouldn't have to help him...just a thought.

 for being a good guy though :)

My 4th gear is like that sometimes, I have MT-90 in as well and it helps but I still have to hit 4th in a specific RPM range to help it shift. Mainly it's down shifting into 4th that it's evident. I usually just skip it now.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
It's a truck transmission; you can't "juice" it. Tell him to go f' himself.

Make a polite suggestion that he consider having the transmission fluid changed out. Many times old fluid will cause the blocker ring in the synchro to become a little "sticky" and not want to glide like it should. Many times a simple fluid change and some driving will correct the condition.

Like someone mentioned above, I'd tell him to put some MT-90 in it and remember it's an 11 year old truck.

Thanks for the advice guys. Like I said, I never noticed when I drove it and sometimes I would get after it. Clutch was tight so you had to go all the way to the floor. I honestly didn't think there was an issue with it. I told him to call me if he had additional questions but he hasn't since yesterday.

Now I need to figure out what to get next... new body style?

Sometimes it just takes getting used to a new driving style in a different car/truck. If I drive my wife's corolla I over rev it all the time at the start just because of how different it is and I'm expecting more resistance. Kinda off topic but it has different shift points as well. So what are you going to get next, FR-S?
