If the growl goes away when you engage 4wd, then it is almost certainly the front diff needle bearing.

It has been officially diagnosed as the front diff needle bearing. You guys that have dealt with this issue what route did you take? Truck has 180k w/ new frame. My guess is a diff job is probably $1k+

I have not had to deal with replacing the needle bearing, but my understanding is that it’s not a terribly difficult job. There is a special tool needed, which there are a few of floating around since once you use it you don’t really need it anymore. I believe ECGS also sells them, along with the bushing you replace the needle bearing with.

If you are mechanically inclined I would suggest looking into doing it yourself for a fraction of the cost.

It is tempting to do a DIY. Anyone know of any good videos?

I got my driveline fluids changed recently and they mentioned a few metal flakes in front diff fluid. Guess that was from the needle bearing failing? What happens if they aren’t replaced?

Does anyone have the needle bearing removal tool for sale?
