Tonight I installed the rear differential, had 4.88 gears installed, as well as installed the new front drive shaft, bought a decent one from a friend then, had driveline service machine the Cardan and install a 16.25 long spline, sick one, decent price.
Got the 37s on, semi bled the brakes, need more fluid, the took it for a cruise, not bad, needs some minor trimming.
Tomorrow I’ll get fluid and install new rear shocks. As of now, she sits at 26.75 in the front and 26.5 in the rear.
I stretch it out this week on some local trails…so stoked!

    Why 4.88 and not 5.29?

    Good question, lack of forethought.
I was never planning on going bigger than 35s

Even when I was IFS 35, I hated 4.88, wish I went 5.29 instead at the time

    I wish too…
But, I made a bad call, live and learn.
Budget dictates at this point, maybe I’ll sell the stuff later, I’m gonna drive it for now.

Thanks, it’s getting there, I’m shaking it down, getting ready to go a little deeper in the woods and a little tougher trails.

Made some gaskets out of a beer box, stacked a couple to fix my dial issues, seemed to work.
Gonna try some out of leather so I can keep reusing them, instead of tearing the things up everytime I gotta get in there.

I bet after putting that much work and modification into a rig it’s kinda scary/sketchy getting out on the harder trails for the first time.

I’ve never done a Sas before, but, it is way capable of taking the abuse. I’m gonna give it to my kid, he can do whatever he can to it.
Just little squeaks and creaks, everything needs to get worked in, I still gotta trim wheel wells, start designing a front and rear bumper, build a dual case, then, I got a line on a 1.9 vw diesel, I might put it in this truck. The build is challenging and the driving is the payday.

Have fun with the diesel while being a resident of Cali with biannual smog.

Also, my understanding is, the engine it was pulled from must be in the same GVWR class. You can’t install a passenger vehicle engine into a truck or use an engine that is older than the vehicle it is going into. I know prior, people were installing 1UZ into their Toyota trucks but IIRC, BAR put a stop to that.

There’s so many loop holes you have to go through that makes it nearly impossible. I spoke to a BAR rep a few years ago about using a 2UZ from a part out Toyota 4Runner/GX since it is readily available, rep said nope and that my options are limited to first gen 2uz Tundra because it’ll be in the same class as Tacoma. The 4R/GX and Tacoma/Tundra are in different weight classes. Rep stated they’ll verify ECU etc to make sure the correct parts are used.
