I was driving my truck and all of a sudden it shut off. So I thought maybe fuel. The truck has been sitting for a year and would like to get it running again. I have replaced the starter, fuel pump and fuel filter. It still turns over but won’t fire so could it be electrical? What about the crack sensor? So confused.

    Thanks

Does it have spark? Are cylinders getting fuel? After cranking is it flooding?

Ok, so I got the tool to check spark and there is spark. Timing is good. What else should I check?

Engine compression and make sure you have fuel pressure.

Hard to check fuel pressure on a Tacoma. You can crack the line loose a turn at fuel filter and crank the engine. Should push fuel out under pressure. Autozone rents engine compression gauges.

Starting fluid, if it starts you know it’s fuel system related. If not usually ignition

Could be crank sensor. Try wiggling it and crank again. If not, try the starting fluid like pairod ice said

I realize this is an old thread, but the relevance is 2004 Tacoma- I had the problem of sudden crank but no start (in an office building parking lot), walked to parts store nearby, got starting fluid, shot it in the PVC port of intake, it ran for 20 seconds, so I knew it must be fuel issue. There's a LOT of BS out there, especially if you are looking in 1st Gen narratives. What I finally found is that the CO/FP relay that was used on many Toyota vehicles including Tacoma was integrated with the EFI relay in 2004 Tacoma. Replaced EFI relay before I knew about CO/FP relay, (very, very little good info about this) still wouldn't start. I finally had it towed home and parked it. Was told repeatedly that "It must be the fuel pump, you just have to go for it". Frankly, I was apprehensive after seeing several posts (here, too) from others who had replaced the fuel pump AND STILL NO START. Here's where I discovered something: While I was looking for the CO/FP relay, I removed the "starter" relay that has a circuit map and the letters JD141W1, to see if the parts store could match it up, They couldn't and I took the relay home and put it back in. I didn't do this immediately, but the next time I cranked it, IT STARTED! However, when I shut it off it would not restart. Again, it wasn't immediate, but I removed and re-inserted the JD141W1 relay again and it started again, and I left it running for maybe 10 minutes- actually I drove it a little bit up and down the street in front of my house, for obvious reason. When I shut it off, I laid my hand on the JD141W1 relay and it seemed overly warm (not really hot). I decided I was going to try again to match up the relay- considering the alternative, and the fact that the old part had been in there for 227K. Advance Auto WAS able to match it, I installed it and I have my truck back. I think the old relay contact points were affecting the power to the fuel pump, but I can't prove it- I'm just glad I didn't have to R&R the fuel pump to get going again. You can research "hot automotive relay" and find a bit of supporting info. Oh, BTW, I ordered the Denso fuel pump, I am going to replace it, but at a time and place of my choosing. Pics of the relay and location attached...
PS: You don't have to take off the lower dash panel to get to the relay, even though I did. Just look under the dash panel near the drivers door.
