04 V6 Head Gasket Issue?

Dad's 04 4Runner with 180K miles and the V6 is starting to display the symptoms of a bad head gasket. In the morning, he'll start it up and the motor just shakes and rattles until it warms up. All the check engine lights illuminate too. It only started this winter and the first few times he just disconnected the battery and it went back to normal operation.

Has Toyota decided to recall this yet or is there any likelihood they would recall it like they did with the previous gen 4Runner?

How much should we expect to pay for an independent shop to fix it?

 

No recall yet, 3-4k at the dealer. I did mine for around $800.
