The wiring is easy, but dropping a case/removing driveshafts standing up vs. on your back is the easier sell. :D

My motto as I get older is #worksmarternotharder. Spent many years with my back on the rocks/dirt doing work. Those days are long gone and if it comes to that again I'd just pay someone to do it haha

I can attest to this. Did it in my driveway. Didn’t even jack it up, left on the wheels lol

Great post! I'm really hoping to do this one day. One thing that I've been confused about is the transmission swap. Is that always necessary or are there just certain models that require it? '07 automatic prerunner here.

You have to have a 4wd output shaft to mate with the transfer case. Yours doesn't have the correct output shaft. You can convert yours or make it easier on yourself and just swap the whole transmission and get a lower mileage one in the process.

I ended up getting a transmission and tcase with 70k less miles than my motor, so win for me.

Little this. Little that 4x4 Swap’d PreRunner
Definitely a good way to get fresher parts. I have ~150k on the motor. New trans has 80 and the tcase had 25 (came out of a 2018 TRD trail edition 4Runner). Shop and ask around when they have multiples.

Yea I had 185K on the truck, trans now has 55K. Def shop around. I know I overpaid for my t case at $451, especially with no shifter, but i am very impatient and wanted 4x4 now lol

I couldn’t get my torque wrench in there. I just used a small ratchet and estimated the torque. Oh and use loctite

Swap in a 6 speed while you’re having the drivetrain out, problem solved :)

We really need to have a Southern California conversion install Meetup day when somebody's going to install so we could see how this process goes. Some of us are on the fence who don't work on cars very much

Theres a few videos on YouTube from various users you can piece together to get a good idea.

Invest in a repair manual too. They have detailed instructions with pictures of replacing/removal etc of all parts. I have the Hayes one. It’s enough to get the idea.
