Yup it's a weld on gussett.

I layed 2-3 passes over the frame and mount last night should hold for now but def need the gussets to renforce the frame

Fan shroud is pretty damaged and oil pan has a good dent in it too, not serious but will need replaced

Looked at my mounts last night (I have a 156K miles on my 05) and they look fine. Should I leave as is, just run some new welds on top and along with the existing welds or add the gussets?

And one more question about installing the DMZ fix, do you grind anything (i.e. what prep needs to be done) before welding the plates on or just clean and start welding?

If your wheelin it might be a good idea to gusset, if its just a road driver probably not likely ull need them but not a bad idea. Think the problem is hit or miss from what I've seen.

I'd guess maybe a little grinding to the factory welds so the gusset fits true, ill have to anyways to welds i layed on but will see how thry fit

I'm next... Daughter just drove 1000 miles back from College and told me "something is wrong with the motor, it sounds terrible" The noise is the fan fitting the plastic shroud as the engine has sunk about an inch.
Just got the call back from the dealership and the mount will be covered under the frame recall.
Parts are back ordered so they will be loaning a new 2015 Nissan Frontier until the work is complete. At the moment the expectation is that it will be more than a month.

You mean that didn't continue for the next 10 years? Yeah, they fixed the frame design by 2007.

Well, there was the weak tailgate fixed at some point. Most other issues like weak springs continue today. Really, the only issue on a 2005 or 2006 to address if you're worried about it would be the motor mounts. I've been off road a lot yet haven't had this problem. All other issues you just address "if" they come up.

I'll know more once the parts are ordered but the service manager thinks the replacement frames come with new springs.
Last spring I bought a set of lightly used OEM replacements from a forum member that had his replaced under warranty but then raised his truck.

Seems like a lot of pricey issues for a "bullet proof" Toyota...

Oh I know... my tailgate is essentially bent it half. I'm just wondering if I should with the coming long travel... probably gonna make me run the truck harder over bumps :D

I have an '06 Tacoma DBLC TRD Sport I bought new. I paid it off this year and, of course, things start happening. I'm not sure if this is a common symptom of the mount fail, but I have a noise that's been increasing in frequency/loosness in the suspension area of the left wheel. When driving on a moderately bumpy road, it clacks like to small pieces of loose metal bouncing off each other. or some kind of a bracket slapping against the frame. It does it when I stop and go. And more when I turn to the left than the right. It's been driving me nuts! I figured out that if I drive up onto a curb with my left front tire and compress the spring, I can rock the car back and forth laterally and it does it. clack clack. Or if I start the truck and turn it off. clack clack clack.

I live in SoCal and there's no rust not the car at all. I also have a level EMU 2.5" lift with dakar leafs in the back and 881's in the front. I do have that common vibration on acceleration, but that may be because of the mount. The reason for the suspension upgrade was because one of the rear leaves broke, so I figured I give it a lift thinking it was something I had done... But I just got a letter about this from Toyota. They're determining how they're going to handle this issue of leaf springs breaking.

So today, I climbed under there when compressed and finally determined that it must be the motor mount. I rocked the truck back and forth with my hand on the mount and it feels like that clack clack is inside the mount itself, but I'm not sure. Can't see it really clearly. But I'll look again tomorrow. I've brought it to three mechanics and a body shop, and no one can figure it out.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Did you have this sound?

This sound started before my extended warranty ran out last year, but I had the tailgate replaced when I still had it. It bent in half when loading a motorcycle. But other than that, it's been a great truck! But it may be time to move on. This is a problem I don't trust at all. I've got kids and I want them to live long lives.

sounds more like a ball joint to me or sway bar end links. I pierced the boots on all my ball joints and greased them and they quieted right down. I replaced the end links and even more noises went away.

    Thanks Jeremy,
Yet another truck to add to the list. Just went to my local mechanic and we jacked the car up. There's a crack around the base of the mount. it just hasn't punched through yet. I called the Dealership where I bought the truck and waiting to hear back. Drag. Just bought new wheels and everything!

I'm curious to hear what happens since those back east can get the frame replaced under the rust frame recall. Since ours don't apply to that yet, it'll be interesting to hear if Toyota covers it the same.
