Recently my speedometer stopped working, it would occasionally go out and I would have to restart the truck. But now it doesn’t work at all. Don’t think it’s my VSS, I have an app that checks speed via the VSS and it works just fine.

    If my memory is correct.
The speed sensor on the Auto trucks is actually an ABS sensor.
The ABS sensor sends a signal to the skid control ECU, the Skid Control ECU
sends a signal to the Speedometer (with is actually part of the whole gauge assembly).

Is there any code stored in the truck.
    Like a P0500?

There are a few other guys on this forum that are pretty good at this stuff.
Maybe one of them will know where to start.

My guess is, it isn’t a speed sensor, since the scan tool can read speed.
And it’s probably not the Skid Control ECU. I “THINK” that is what actually converts the ABS signal to a speed signal. I may be wrong, I’d wait and see what the other guys say.

The instrument cluster receives its speed signal from the ABS ECU and converts the ABS estimated speed and then supplies to the PCM. The ABS speed is determined by using the wheel speed sensors in some kind of weighted averaging circuit along with failure detection logic. I'd ask these guys if you have more questions, they designed the system.

No code, no ABS warning either. It started to work again. It’s been doing this the past few months. Will work most of the time, but then it will stop for a bit. Sometimes it will work again after I restart, sometimes now.

I’m guessing it’ll be something in the instrument cluster going out of there are no codes. You can send it out for rebuilds.
