I already read that post anthonyf250 but thanks for linking it for others to see. If u read the posts in that link at the end after they replace the shifter assembly the problem still comes back after a few days. Read the whole post to your link anthonyf250 they start getting into wire issues. But i am considering forcing the shifter by hand using blunt force to override the selonoid. So that i can drive it to the shop. Does anyone think this will harm the shifter further? ?

Might as well try it I guess if you don't want to get towed out.

    here's a wiring schematic.

with a little testing you should be able to determine which switch or solenoid is not engaged
if you use a power probe you may be able to get it to release.

    good luck.

As mentioned above , its only a couple bolts to drop the driveshafts .
You have to remove both driveshafts because 4x4 .
This will at least get your tires rolling . It may not get your steering wheel turning but it will get the wheels turning again .
Go under the truck and Disconnect the shifter cable or rod from the transmission . Its only 1 nut shown in the picture
    http://www.customtacos.com/tech.old...6toyrm/06toypdf/06rmsrc/rm2006ta/02700610.pdf

Once you have removed the nut that holds the cable on , see if you can manually move the gear selector on the side of the transmission through all the gears by hand . If you put a wrench on the shaft and twist , you should feel it click
Its not uncommon for a bolt on the valve body to loosen and prevent the transmission from coming out of park . The above mentioned test will verify that all is good within the transmission pan. You should feel the transmission selector shaft click as you go through the detents
Once you have tried this , post back and let us know what happened.
From your explanation , it sounds like an electrical issue , disconnecting the shifter from the transmission and trying to shift by hand will eliminate the transmission as the problem
EDIT . if you are trying this , make sure you are on flat ground . You dont want the truck rolling over you . Might be an idea to block the wheels

Just the rear drive shaft will do, the front is fine since it has an A.D.D. as long is it's in 2Hi.

I thought of the front diff as well but then i also thought if the truck was going to be towed in 4x4 . if the front shaft stays on , you can in fact overheat the trans if the truck isnt running . Better to eliminate the possibilty

Ok I'm going to try to disconnect the shifter cable. And manually move the transmission under the truck. That seems like something i can handle. Thanks gearcruncher

So i opted to just give it a try by forcing the shifter by hand from park into drive. I tried this and it worked but i did hear a quick snap as i forced it into drive.

So i drove it straight to the Toyota dealer and wouldn't you know it when i got there and when i put it into park for the first time since i forced it, it went right into drive when i tried it in the parking lot of the Toyota dealer. Go figure. So even though its now working i left it with Toyota dealer to see what they can find out

Well Toyota told me today that i broke the selonoid when i forced it by hand into drive. But they also think that the selonoid was going bad anyway. So since i broke something on the shifter it doesn't really matter because it will be replaced as a single sealed unit. Cost 650$ plus tax. But thats if thats why it got stuck in the first place. They said they can't really test it properly until its replaced. So....to be continued

Shift lock solenoids are over rated. Didn't have them on automatics when I was younger.... Next they will be installing locks on manuals.

If all it was was a shift lock solenoid on an older Tacoma I'm not sure I would replace it at that price $ 650 dollars. Nope, not me.

I know i actually thought about not replacing it at all but since Toyota was going to charge me 150$ any way just fot looking at it, i figured better to get some value for my money plus if it happens again it would cost me even more.
