Miz, if you order the 7 screws (part # a few pages back) they will sit flush. A T-30 torx bit or screwdriver fits them perfectly.

The screws in your picture that says " These are ok" are the one you want to for the top screws. Unless you want to drill the hole out like some the guys have done here.

BTW the Torx bolt size you want is T-30

Miz, that's a fine writeup, and I wish I knew how to put up pictures like that myself! I do have a suggestion for you, though: Somewhere within these 14 pages, actually several places, you could have found reference to those screws you find fault with. Surprising you hadn't read everything you could about the mod before you tried installing it! The short story is, take one of the good screws to the dealer and match it from dealer stock. Good deal on the new tailgate, sorry about the paint issue!

You'll need 7 of these. I had to have my local dealer order them but they arrived 2 days later. Total cost was under 10 bucks

Thank you for the nice words.

Now, I'm going to try very hard to overlook the smarmy and condescending tone of the remainder of your post. First, I would very much like to point out that this thread now has TWENTY-EIGHT pages, not 14. And had you looked through my other posts, you would have noticed that yes, I did indeed read through this entire thread two months ago when I started whipping things up to get another group buy going.

This is why I prefaced my last post with the words: "...and came across something odd that I don't recall anyone else mentioning before", because it has been two months since I read through all these pages and over 500+ posts in this thread.

I'll thank you not to presume that I have not done any research before taking on this project. I most certainly did. You'll probably also have noticed that the search feature on forums such as these aren't the best at picking out the most pertinent posts when you're trying to find certain specific information. I did, however, manage to pick up some time back that I would have to acquire replacement bolts, clips, etc. at the dealership. I was remiss in including that info in my last post, though.

I realize that I must be one of a very small number of chicks in this forum, and it must be hard to take females in a predominantly male forum seriously. I'm used to that. My father taught me to work on all my vehicles and I have done so for the past 30+ years, up to and including my '75 FLH. (Not a Toyota) Installing a reinforcement plate is not so complicated that I have to disassemble a drive train or take half the damn truck apart to complete.

Of course, your post was probably just a troll to get just this reaction from me, in which case you and those like you can eat me. :luvya:

Yay, Lord Helmet! I had to go back to page 20, but I found it. :D I never could find the post by Sugar Silva repeating your info... oh well. If I get some of those replacement white clip things the screws go into, I'll post that part # later too.

Thanks for the totally non-smarmy rose-throwing support from the rest of you guys. heh. I'm not worthy! (I *do* feel a lot better though.)

T-30 torx bit is that star that holds the plate onto the tailgate. And I added washers to the funky screws that sat up to high.

OK Mizzz, You've demonstrated that you are a formidable ball buster, and you've certainly proven beyond a doubt that you're just one of the guys. I can deal with all that, and your beer bar language, but I draw the line at the suggestion that a man would consider going down on the likes of you. You can't have your cake and get eaten too, babe.

Just received and installed mine today. I did not remove the top screws, the lower holes were off a little, but I was able to thread them slowly and they appeared to go in straight without any issues. Those plastic clips suck though, stripped one of them. Will have to replace it when I install my pop-n-lock. Also, I noticed the gate fit is a little tighter (removed the rubber bumpers). Especially on the left sided for some reason, can't figure it out. Definitely have to close it harder then I did before. When I pull the latch to open the gate there is a much stronger pop on release from the extra tension too. Anyone else have this issue? I assume its because the gate is thicker.

Correct and I see you learn the hard way about not cranking down on the screws when installed the panel. Hand tighten only, no need to go kamikaze on the screws ;)

Ha, yeah. No worries, I'll pick up a few extra of those plastic pieces and replace the stripped ones when I install my pop and lock. Thanks confirming the the gate will be harder to close. No need to worry about the extra tension on the latch over time? I could remove the OEM plastic cover and just leave it bare metal, but I like the look. Wonder if I can modify it...hmmm.

You can adjust the striker if you feel it's too tight of a tension for you. I know I adjusted my striker a little bit on the driver side. I left my oem plastic cover over the Relentless panel but then again my panel is powder coated by Relentless and aluminum also.
